There’s been plenty of discussion about the late, beloved Dame Maggie Smith and her role in the upcoming film “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,” set for release in 2025. Creator Julian Fellowes collaborated with the on-screen legend for years before the Dowager Countess bid farewell in “Downton Abbey 2.” In an interesting turn of events, Fellowes has shared that the new movie will honor Smith’s legacy in two significant ways.
To start, let me see if you remember the final scenes of the movie “The New Era”. It concluded with the Dowager Countess assuring her son that his father was indeed his true father and there was no affair involved. Soon after, the Dowager Countess sadly passed away. The film ended with a glimpse of a new portrait of Violet in the entrance hall, implying that her presence (and an important portrait) would continue when “The Grand Finale” unfolds its story for those loyal fans who have followed it throughout the years.
We deeply felt her absence as we worked on this, yet she was with us – spiritually speaking. Her name often came up during discussions, and her portrait graces our hallway.
During an interview with The Times prior to the major release of Downton Abbey 3, Fellowes discussed Maggie Smith’s role within the movie. Like others involved in the production, he noted that it was significant to offer a tribute to Smith, as Michelle Dockery had also previously confirmed this. Gareth Naeme also mentioned that Smith’s passing both in the series and in real life added an emotional depth and significance to the upcoming film.
Instead, Fellowes offers fans some fresh insights. Additionally, it’s advisable for fans to stay till the very end, for Fellowes, the veteran writer, director, and producer, has one more way of honoring the late actress (who passed away at 89) in the movie.
[The credits will carry a tribute ]because she was so much to do with the show’s success.
It’s often challenging to discern whether it’s a message or a flashback scene, but it’s safe to assert that the Dowager Countess, particularly her relationship with Lady Mary, has been the most significant and captivating element of the show. While we certainly care about Robert, Cora, Tom, and the downstairs staff, especially Carson, the Dowager Countess consistently delivered the best one-liners and served as the emotional core of “Downton Abbey.
It appears that this sentiment also applies to the cast members, as Hugh Bonneville shared that upon the initial conclusion of the series, he celebrated with a champagne toast alongside his on-screen mother. He even had the opportunity to express to Smith how extraordinary it was for her to be his television mother.
Even though I didn’t expect “Downton Abbey: A New Era” would conclude without her, here we are, three years after the last film’s events, and the 1930s have arrived in the Downton timeline. It’s a mix of emotions that the series is ending, but it’s heartwarming to see how they acknowledged her memory and the significant role she played in the franchise’s longevity.
