Two Original Avengers Actors Are in a Movie Together That’s Out Next Week (& You Probably Had No Idea)

The original six actors from The Avengers have all stayed active in other projects outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Scarlett Johansson starred in Fly Me to the Moon and two Wes Anderson films, and she took over the lead role in the Jurassic World series with Jurassic World Rebirth. Jeremy Renner continued his role as Mike McLusky in Mayor of Kingstown after Hawkeye, and also appeared in the latest Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man. Despite returning for Avengers: Doomsday, Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. have both taken on roles outside of Marvel. Evans has been in films like Lightyear, The Gray Man, and Red One, while Downey Jr. recently won an Oscar for his performance in Oppenheimer.

Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo continue to take on roles outside of the Marvel universe as well. They’re even teaming up in an upcoming movie called Crime 101, which is based on a story by Don Winslow, the author of The Force and Savages.

What Is Crime 101 About?

Chris Hemsworth stars as Mike Davis, a skilled jewel thief known for robbing people on the highway. When an insurance broker, played by Halle Berry, proposes a massive heist, Davis accepts. However, this puts him squarely in the crosshairs of the detective relentlessly pursuing him, Det. Lu Lubesnick, played by Mark Ruffalo.

The movie’s title is inspired by a set of guidelines Davis uses to thrive in his profession. It’s similar to how Jesse Eisenberg’s character in a zombie movie explains the rules for staying alive.

The film’s cast also includes Barry Keoghan (known from Eternals and The Batman) as fellow criminal Ormon, Monica Barbaro (Top Gun: Maverick) as Maya, Davis’s date, and Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Nick Nolte (48 Hrs.), and Tate Donovan, who famously voiced Hercules in the 1997 animated film.

This isn’t the first time Don Winslow’s work has been turned into a film. His novel The Death and Life of Bobby Z became a movie in 2007 with Paul Walker, Laurence Fishburne, and Olivia Wilde, and Savages captured the sunny, dangerous vibe of California and cartel life. While neither film was a major success, Winslow’s later books are generally considered stronger, and both of those adaptations were based on his earlier work. Crime 101, however, appeared in Broken, a highly regarded collection that shares thematic territory with his Cartel trilogy, his Danny Ryan trilogy, and the sweeping, fast-paced novel The Force, which has long been considered a potential movie project.

If you’re hoping to see the Avengers clash in a different way, or you’re a fan of Winslow’s writing and want to see it brought to life on the big screen, Crime 101 is the movie for you. It arrives in theaters on February 13th.
