It’s time to pull back the curtain on America’s Next Top Model.
Tyra Banks, the original host of America’s Next Top Model for its first 22 seasons, is one of the people sharing their experiences in a new documentary called Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model. It will be available on Netflix starting February 16th.
The 52-year-old stated in a recently released film trailer, ‘I’ve kept quiet for a long time, but now I’m ready to speak up.’
She also shared that she originally intended the show – which surprisingly lasted 24 seasons – to be a critique of the fashion world. However, she acknowledged that she sometimes went too far with challenges in order to please viewers.
Tyra admits she pushed things too far. She explains that while it got extremely intense, the contestants seemed to want more, so they continued to raise the bar.
The documentary features several original judges from the series, including J. Alexander and Nigel Barker, who both express feeling betrayed by Tyra Banks. Jay Manuel, the show’s creative director, also appears in the documentary, titled Reality Check.
Watching the trailer, it really hit me – Tyra is completely dedicated to making her show a success. It’s like, she’d go to any lengths! And the preview even hints at some intense moments – someone actually asks if they’d be willing to be slapped, and then immediately retaliate? It sounds wild, honestly, and shows just how far things are willing to go on the show.
The supermodel admitted the show hadn’t held up well over time, especially considering recent criticism about issues like body shaming, troubling photo shoots, and drastic makeovers.
During an awards ceremony in February 2025, Tyra Banks shared that when she created America’s Next Top Model over 20 years ago, her team faced a significant challenge in bringing diversity to television, as it wasn’t commonly represented at the time.
Tyra explained that she wanted to challenge conventional beauty standards at a time when people questioned her casting choices. She wondered why a girl from a humble background could become a supermodel, but someone from an inner-city neighborhood couldn’t. Despite resistance, she fought to make it happen and showcase diverse representations of beauty.
She added at the time, “Did we get it right?Hell no. I said some dumb s–t.”

The Life Size actress went on to defiantly defend her legacy.
She stated she doesn’t want to be remembered for online content, emphasizing her and others’ impact on the world through decades of real-world change. She expressed excitement about paving the way for future generations.
