Ubisoft, Arbitrum to launch ‘Captain Laserhawk’ Web3 shooter Dec. 18

As a seasoned crypto investor with a penchant for gaming and a soft spot for nostalgia, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement about the upcoming launch of Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E. The fusion of classic top-down shooter mechanics, competitive leaderboards, Web3 features, and characters from my favorite Ubisoft titles is an enticing proposition.

On December 18th, the Arbitrum Foundation and gaming titan Ubisoft revealed the official release date for “Captain Laserhawk: The G.A.M.E.”, an action game with web3 integration that’s played from a top-down perspective.

The game takes place within the Ubisoft gaming universe, boasting a diverse ensemble of characters hailing from various titles such as Far Cry: Blood Dragon, Rayman, Assassin’s Creed, Beyond Good and Evil, The Crew, Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell, and Watch Dogs.

As an analyst, I find that my gameplay experience with Captain Laserhawk seamlessly blends traditional top-down shooting mechanics alongside competitive rankings and Web3 functionalities. Narratively, it’s a spinoff from the 2023 television series “Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix,” which originally aired on Netflix. This game is part of Ubisoft’s initiative to delve into Web3, blockchain technology, and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs).

NFTs and Web3

Starting December 11th, Captain Laserhawk’s game will debut on the Ethereum’s second layer network, Arbitrum, and an accompanying NFT creation process via Magic Eden will also initiate.

The Captain Laserhawk game account on X.com announced through a social media post that the complimentary players they’re providing will come loaded with useful features, such as the ability to vote in governance matters and unique collectibles modeled after iconic characters from Ubisoft like Rayman and Splinter Cell.

As per Nina Rong, who leads partnerships at Arbitrum Foundation, the game’s debut signifies a significant milestone in the field.

“Today’s mint, and next week’s launch, will be a cornerstone moment as we look towards the future of game development and player experience. Forever, players have followed the storylines, character arcs, and game designs that were given to them. Now, that changes.”

Blockchain gaming

The realm of Web3 gaming is thriving and expanding, as indicated by recent reports from CryptoMoon. Notably, sales of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) have been consistently rising since October. During the first week of December alone, it’s estimated that a staggering $187 million worth of these tokens were sold.

In the meantime, the Beam Foundation will soon introduce a $150 million fund aimed at boosting Web3 gaming within Abu Dhabi.

Although the industry faced challenges following the 2021 surge in NFTs and subsequent market instability, web3 games and blockchain-entertainment apps are showing positive signs as we move towards 2025.
