Ubisoft CEO Wants to Bring Multiplayer Aspects to Far Cry Franchise to Extend Play Time

In the realm of franchises, Far Cry stands out for its immersive single-player experience due to its expansive open worlds and diverse player options. However, Ubisoft’s CEO, Yves Guillemot, envisions expanding the franchise’s appeal by attracting more multiplayer enthusiasts. At Saudi Arabia’s New Global Sport Conference (as reported by GameFile), Guillemot hinted that the objective for Far Cry is to emphasize multiplayer features significantly, making it a game that can keep players engaged for extended periods.

It’s worth mentioning that throughout the series, different Far Cry games have included some type of multiplayer mode based on the specific title. For example, Far Cry 3 from 2013 featured a distinct game mode where up to four players could collaborate within linear levels and engage in firefights against enemies. In contrast, Far Cry 4 offered a more open-ended co-op multiplayer experience.

Attempts have been made to integrate competitive multiplayer into the Far Cry series, notably in Far Cry 4 and Far Cry 5. However, these multiplayer modes didn’t gain much traction with the players. Consequently, Ubisoft chose not to pursue this concept when developing Far Cry 6, opting instead for co-op multiplayer only.

Regarding future installments of the Far Cry series, Ubisoft hasn’t officially unveiled any plans yet. Nonetheless, whispers have been circulating about a potential Far Cry 7 in production. An article dated December 2024 hinted that this game could deviate from the typical features of the series. This supposedly secret project is being referred to as Blackbird.

In terms of gameplay enhancements, Far Cry 6 is anticipated to introduce fresh features such as strategic sprinting, jumping, and sliding, in addition to other innovative movement options. There are whispers that the game may incorporate a loot system, similar to what’s found in other high-profile Ubisoft titles like Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint from 2019.

Initially, it was noted that the team behind Far Cry 7 seemed hopeful about the game’s progress. On the other hand, a different project known as Maverick has been met with doubts within the company. Some insiders speculate that this project is essentially Ubisoft’s attempt to follow current market trends.

As a gaming enthusiast, I was thrilled when I first heard that Far Cry 7 was set to drop in Fall 2025. But it looks like things have taken a twist since then. The latest buzz suggests Ubisoft might be pushing the release to either 2026 or 2027.
