Developing video games can take a long time – sometimes years. Occasionally, a game becomes famous not for its features, but for how long it spends in development. Hollow Knight: Silksong and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond are recent examples of games that went silent during development, with their studios sharing very little information. Ubisoft has a similarly mysterious project, and after 17 years since it was first announced, the game has reappeared in the news – not with a trailer or release date, but with new job postings, suggesting work is still underway.
The game Beyond Good and Evil 2 was originally announced way back in 2008, but news went quiet for several years. It reappeared in 2017 with a stunning trailer, and now, a recent job posting for a Technical Sound Designer suggests development is picking up again. Ubisoft hasn’t officially shared updates since 2020, but the job description itself provides some clues about the project.
Working with the Audio Director in Montpellier, you’ll be responsible for making sure all the sound elements created by the team function correctly in the game, and align with the director’s creative goals. This involves finding and applying technical solutions for integrating and implementing these audio systems.
Ubisoft has been hiring for various positions recently, but this is the first one clearly connected to the highly anticipated game. Whether this job listing will actually lead to development remains to be seen. It’s been 17 years since Beyond Good and Evil 2 was originally announced, and Ubisoft hasn’t demonstrated significant progress on it for quite some time.
Despite the long development process, trailers for the upcoming space adventure game look promising. It features vast open worlds to explore, exciting spaceship battles, and the ability to play with others. It’s understandable why Beyond Good and Evil 2 has faced so many challenges – Ubisoft is trying to combine a lot of different gameplay ideas into one massive project that’s bigger in scope than their usual games.

Developing a game for 17 years is a really long time. While we don’t know all the details about the progress of Beyond Good and Evil 2, other Ubisoft games have faced development issues in the past. Skull and Bones, which was intended to be a groundbreaking “AAAA” title, had a troubled development and didn’t quite live up to expectations. There’s also been a lot of talk about a remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which might finally be coming out soon. Hopefully, Beyond Good and Evil 2 can finally make some headway.
As a longtime gamer, I’ve definitely noticed games taking longer and costing a lot more to make these days. Seventeen years is a really long wait for a sequel, but honestly, it kind of makes sense. Technology is always changing – better graphics, new consoles – and we players expect so much more from games now. That all takes time! It’s great when developers finally get a game out, but sadly, some projects just get cancelled, or even worse, released before they’re finished.
