It seems unlikely we’ll see any more Watch Dogs games. Reports suggest that Ubisoft, the publisher, has decided to end the series.
The company, currently facing significant difficulties with falling stock prices, has reportedly cancelled the Watch Dogs franchise after the disappointing performance of its latest game, Watch Dogs Legion.
Watch Dogs was initially promoted as a competitor to the popular game Grand Theft Auto. It was intended to be the publisher’s take on the open-world, city-based gameplay that genre offered.
The initial game, taking place in Chicago, was quite serious in its approach. However, it effectively combined Ubisoft’s established open-world formula with clever features, such as a smartphone that allowed players to interact with the city’s systems and people.
Watch Dogs 2, the sequel to the original game, moved to a lively San Francisco and improved on the first game with a more engaging story and memorable characters.
Watch Dogs Legion, the game set in London that let you control any character, didn’t quite succeed. While ambitious in its concept, it lacked a strong story to tie everything together.
News that the next Watch Dogs game may be cancelled comes from industry insider Tom Henderson, who discussed it on a recent podcast.
After the cancellation of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, people are now doubting his reliability, especially because he had suggested the game would be released unexpectedly this month. It’s clear Ubisoft is facing frequent internal changes.
Despite filming finishing in 2024, a Watch Dogs movie is still planned for release. Director Mathieu Turi recently responded to rumors claiming the project was cancelled, simply asking “Is it?” on X (formerly Twitter), suggesting the film is still in development.
Although the movie is still planned for release, a new game based on the property isn’t likely anytime soon. Ubisoft currently lacks the necessary funds and resources to invest in the brand.
