This year, there have been numerous job cuts in the gaming industry, and now Ubisoft is among those companies reducing their workforce. As reported by IGN, Ubisoft’s studio, Red Storm Entertainment, has undergone a round of layoffs that affected 19 employees, according to the company’s statement.
In a recent announcement, Ubisoft explained that the job cuts they’ve made are part of their global cost reduction strategy and strategic reorganization. They have further confirmed that they are providing extensive support to the employees who were impacted by these layoffs, including generous severance packages, prolonged healthcare benefits, and career transition aid.
As a gamer speaking about Red Storm Entertainment, I’d put it like this: “Today, we at Ubisoft chose to eliminate 19 positions within our studio, Red Storm Entertainment. This move is part of our ongoing strategic restructuring and cost-saving initiatives across the globe, tailored to fit the specific needs of our projects. It wasn’t an easy choice, but it was a necessary one considering our operational priorities. We are dedicated to assisting those affected by this decision with generous severance packages, extended health benefits, and career transition services. They have been invaluable contributors to Ubisoft, and we truly appreciate their hard work and the impact they’ve made on our games.
At present, the company has verified that only Red Storm Entertainment among its studios is undergoing layoffs. Yet, they have remained silent on questions concerning the studio’s current status and the number of employees currently employed.
Since its establishment in 1996 by Tom Clancy, Red Storm Entertainment – now better known as Ubisoft Red Storm – has been involved in creating numerous games. Initially conceived as a studio producing games from Tom Clancy’s espionage novel series, it subsequently led to the development of multiple titles within the Rainbow Six series. Eventually, the studio was taken over by Ubisoft in 2000.
For the past ten years, Red Storm Entertainment has mainly focused on providing assistance for the development of Virtual Reality spin-offs, such as “Star Trek: Bridge Crew” and a now-cancelled “Splinter Cell” VR game. They were also involved in the production of “The Division Heartland”, but this project was unfortunately scrapped last year.
This month, Ubisoft announced they won’t be holding their own gaming event – usually referred to as Ubisoft Forward – in 2021. Normally presented alongside June events like Future Games Show and Summer Game Fest, the show was called off for the year, with Ubisoft explaining that they simply didn’t have much new content to reveal this time.
A representative from Ubisoft shared, “We’re excited to engage with our gaming community and display our games. We’re constantly seeking ways to keep you informed, and we can’t wait to disclose more details in the future.
Currently, Ubisoft is working on several games, such as a remake of the popular game “The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,” and also the upcoming installment in its city-building series titled “Anno 1817: Roman Peace.
