There’s no way around it, folks: these are tough times for the industry – and, honestly, the world.
According to reports, Ubisoft is closing its studios in Winnipeg and Belgrade. The company is also reorganizing its Barcelona studio to concentrate on the Rainbow Six game. This restructuring could result in the loss of up to 380 jobs, according to VGC.
The company is also making changes within its Global Publishing unit, which will unfortunately result in some job losses across various departments.
The French publisher is facing significant challenges and has been making a series of cuts to reduce costs. They recently pledged to lower fixed expenses by €200 million (around $230 million) over the next two years, and have already cancelled several games and let go of hundreds of employees this year.
The Ubisoft studio in Winnipeg opened in 2018 and specializes in creating the core technologies – such as the Anvil and Snowdrop engines – that other Ubisoft studios rely on.
I started working at the Belgrade studio back in 2016, and we’ve been involved in some really cool games since then, like The Crew 2 and Riders Republic. It’s been awesome contributing to those projects!
Obviously we wish the best to all affected.
