In a court decision, James Howells, an IT professional hailing from Newport, Wales, was unable to retrieve a hard drive containing approximately $770 million in Bitcoins, as he had lost the related legal dispute.
In a regrettable turn of events, a hard drive containing approximately $770 million worth of Bitcoin mined back in 2009 ended up in a trash dump, as it was unknowingly discarded. Unfortunately for its owner, James Howells, access to the landfill is currently restricted by the Newport City Council due to environmental regulations.
Recently, Judge Keyser, the Commercial Circuit Judge of Wales, dismissed Howells’ lawsuit aiming to gain entry to the Newport landfill in order to retrieve his hard drive.
According to a January 9th BBC report, Keyser stated that the chances of the legal case being successful at a full trial were extremely slim.
As a researcher since 2013, I’ve consistently sought and appealed to the council for authorization to explore the site, proposing to split any discovered Bitcoins, should we find the hard drive in question.
2024 marked a surge of attention towards the Howells’ case, coinciding with Bitcoin‘s unprecedented surge to reach $100,000. This remarkable event led to Bitcoin yielding more than 130% in annual profits.
CryptoMoon has approached Howells for comment.
