Ultimate Endgame #1 Begins The End of Marvel’s Grand Experiment in Epic Fashion

Concluding Marvel’s sprawling Ultimate Universe was a huge undertaking, given all the storylines and characters involved. However, the creative team—Deniz Camp, Terry and Rachel Dodson, Jonas Scharf, Federico Lee, Edgar Delgado, and Cory Petit—tackled this challenge with Ultimate Endgame. Now that the first issue is out, any initial worries have largely disappeared. The team has proven they can deliver a satisfying conclusion while still keeping readers surprised and engaged.

From the very beginning, the Ultimate Universe has been anticipating the return of The Maker, and his looming presence shaped every choice made. Now that he’s back from exile, the plans created by Iron Lad, Doctor Doom, and their team are finally set in motion. True to the unpredictable nature of this world, none of those plans go as expected, which is a testament to the masterful storytelling by Camp throughout the entire issue.

Rating: 4 out of 5

PROS CONS
Scharf and Delgado’s The Maker is the definition of menacing There is a lot happening, and if you haven’t followed everything, you could get lost
Spider-Man feels accurate to Hickman’s version Would have loved more of the core 4 heroes, but issue 2 should improve that
Every step is unpredictable

This issue really highlights the significant impact Iron Lad has had on the world during the Maker’s absence, and just how involved he is in everything happening now. The scope of UltNet and the Ultimates’ reach is huge, and the author uses this to quickly show how the world’s conflicts are developing. However, with so much going on, readers who aren’t completely familiar with the story so far might feel a bit confused.

No matter how much you understand the conflicts happening globally, it’s clear that Iron Lad is essential for things to go well, and even a small problem could ruin everything. Camp emphasizes that real people are suffering because of these events, and Iron Lad will have to cope with that responsibility while still trying to find a solution.

Now let’s talk about what happens inside the bubble. Once the team goes through, things become wonderfully unpredictable. Unexpected characters pop up and take part in the story, and even the city itself isn’t what you’d think. There’s a lot happening, but it feels less like being overloaded with details and more like the story is cleverly setting up exciting things to come. I’m completely hooked and eager to see what happens next.

As a huge fan, I have to say the art on Ultimate Endgame is just phenomenal. The Dodsons and Blee really nailed the action, making every battle feel explosive and vibrant. And Scharf and Delgado’s take on the Maker? Seriously intimidating – it’s easily the most menacing version I’ve ever seen, and the city he rules feels appropriately dangerous. Petit’s lettering is the perfect finishing touch, giving every panel a real punch. Oh, and can we talk about how awesome Death’s Head looks? I’m so glad he’s part of this story!

Okay, so there’s a lot going on in this issue, and honestly, I wished we’d gotten a little more time with some of the characters. But considering everything this book is trying to cover, that was always going to be tough. I have a feeling it’s only going to get more challenging as they start bringing in storylines with the X-Men, Black Panther, and Wolverine down the line, but right now, Ultimate Endgame #1 manages to pull off something pretty incredible.
