Marvel’s Ultimate Universe has been a huge success in 2025, and it’s all building towards a big conclusion with the upcoming series, Ultimate Endgame. This series will feature a massive showdown bringing together all the heroes and villains fans have come to know, like The Ultimates, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Black Panther, the X-Men, and many others. Writer Deniz Camp has expertly woven together all these storylines and characters, and recently spoke with ComicBook about bringing the Ultimate Universe to a close, any changes he made to his original plans, and what’s in store for the heroes like The Ultimates and Spider-Man.
It’s honestly not fair to ask Mark Camp to choose a favorite member of the Ultimates – he genuinely loves them all! But he did share what he enjoys about working with each of them. He really loves working with Doctor Doom and Tony Stark, especially Tony’s hopeful attitude. He also appreciates She-Hulk’s sincerity and how dedicated she is. And even though everything about Hawkeye has changed, he’s still Hawkeye – that same bold, energetic character, just with a modern twist. It’s cool to see that core personality shine through despite all the updates.

Camp shared that they enjoyed developing a wide range of characters with the intention of giving each one enough depth to potentially star in their own story. They put a lot of effort into making each character well-rounded, hoping it would resonate with readers and make people care about what happened to them. Ultimately, Camp hopes readers will feel satisfied with how each character’s journey concludes.
Marvel’s Decision To End The Ultimate Universe Worked Out In The End For The Story

Camp shared that he was initially surprised by Marvel’s decision to end the Ultimate Universe storyline, especially since he’d intentionally left some plot threads open for future development. Luckily, he was already planning a large-scale event around this point in the story, so the change ultimately fit into his plans.
As a fan, it’s really cool to hear how naturally this big storyline came together! Apparently, the plan was always to build towards something huge with issue #18. It wasn’t originally intended to be the ultimate ending, or even a limited series, and the writer didn’t even know they’d be the one finishing it all off! They were exploring lots of possibilities for what would happen to the universe afterward, but they did know The Maker would appear and everything needed to come to a head. It just felt right that all the storylines should build to something impactful, especially connecting it to The Maker’s arrival.
My original idea for The Ultimates was to build towards a major event in issue #18, and that plan remained consistent throughout the first 18 issues, regardless of whether the series would continue. There were only small adjustments made – perhaps wrapping up a plot point or two a bit quicker – to set things up for potential future storylines, but overall, the core plan stayed the same.
Although some adjustments were needed because of the story’s conclusion, ending the universe might have actually been a good thing. It freed the writers from needing to leave possibilities open for future installments or different creative teams.

Camp explained that the creative process allowed everyone involved – and especially himself – to focus on what felt right for the story and its characters. Instead of worrying about long-term implications or responsibility to future writers, they prioritized drama, authenticity, and natural character development. He used the example of making difficult choices, like killing off a character or turning them into a villain, explaining that they always asked themselves if the decision would open up more storytelling possibilities rather than limit them.
“That to me is always kind of my guiding star, whether I’m continuing with the book or somebody else is going to continue with the book. To be a good steward, to be a good creator, and a creative partner, I feel it’s incumbent upon me to make choices that lead to, at least in my mind, more story potential, more story possibilities for what comes after, rather than fewer,” Camp said. “Sometimes that means you can’t do the thing that’s kind of right for your story because you’re thinking about, well, this thing is going to continue on and what comes after. And I didn’t have to do that. I could let all these stories kind of end in whatever way they were going to end, whether it be death or quitting or turning to the other side or whatever, and so it just gave me a lot more freedom.”
Ultimate Endgame Finally Brings Everyone To The Party

A major benefit of leading a huge, universe-ending storyline is the ability to include characters from all different Marvel series. This event will feature favorites like the X-Men, Spider-Man, Black Panther, and others, and the creators are committed to staying true to what makes those characters special.
Camp explained that he enjoys continuing the stories of established characters while staying true to their core values. He pointed to Spider-Man #24 and Ultimate Endgame #1 as examples, highlighting how the importance of family and caring for loved ones remains a central theme. His goal is to build on that foundation, creating new and engaging stories that honor the character’s history and previous iterations while also exploring fresh ideas and combinations.

Camp explained that his main characters, featured in ‘Ultimates,’ are reaching the conclusion of a story he’s been developing for over 30 issues. He’s enthusiastic about how things are coming together and feels confident in delivering a satisfying ending for his characters, while also hoping to honor the contributions of his collaborators, Peach, John, Bryan, and Chris.
The first issue of Ultimate Endgame arrives in comic shops on December 31st.
