A developer recently shared new information about the cancelled Ultimate Spider-Man 2 video game. Back in the early 2000s, licensed games were very popular, boosted by the rise of 3D graphics which allowed for more detailed and immersive game worlds. Games based on movies were also becoming big hits, especially after Treyarch’s excellent Spider-Man 2 game, which many consider to be one of the best Spider-Man games ever. The following year, they released Ultimate Spider-Man, based on the comic book of the same name. It was a fantastic game, but unfortunately, a sequel was never made.
While many Spider-Man games are excellent, Ultimate Spider-Man often gets overlooked. It never received a follow-up and was released on a console generation that was quickly becoming outdated. Coming out shortly before the Xbox 360 and a year before the PS3 meant many players missed out on the game entirely. Despite this, it’s remembered fondly for its distinctive art style, appearances from other Marvel heroes like Johnny Storm, and other features. Fans have often wondered about a potential sequel and why it never materialized, but plans for one were actually considered at one time.
Ultimate Spider-Man 2 Was Cancelled Because It Wasn’t as Popular as the Movie Tie-In Games

A lot of information about the cancelled Ultimate Spider-Man 2 game surfaced online earlier this year, including early designs and story ideas. The game would have heavily featured the Ultimate version of Green Goblin, focusing on the characters Harry and Norman Osborn. Now, concept artist Ian Hosfeld is discussing the project, explaining in an interview with Spider-Man News that the game was cancelled because, despite having reasonable sales, they didn’t meet Activision’s expectations.
The games based on the Spider-Man movies performed very well financially for Activision, but Ultimate Spider-Man didn’t quite reach those expectations. Hosfeld realized that more people went to see the movies than were interested in buying a typical Spider-Man game. After Treyarch got the rights to make James Bond games, they started working on a new 007 title. Hosfeld also mentioned that if Ultimate Spider-Man 2 had been made, it would have featured Wolverine and Daredevil, and players would have been able to control Green Goblin, just like Venom in the original game.
We didn’t make a lot of progress, but Brian Reed, Chris Busse, Chris Soares, and I worked on outlining the main story. It started with an idea from Brian Bendis about the Osborn family and their Green Goblin personas. We planned for the Green Goblin to be a playable character, similar to Venom, and also considered including guest appearances from characters like Wolverine and Daredevil. Some of my early story sketches recently surfaced online, so now that they’re public, I’ll be sharing them to show what we had envisioned.
