Ultimate Wolverine #13 Is Entertaining Filler with One Baffling Choice (Review)

The Ultimate Wolverine series has always divided fans – some love it, others strongly dislike it. Critics often say it feels like other Wolverine stories, which isn’t entirely true; it takes familiar elements from the Weapon X storyline and adds its own unique spin, just like most comics. As a fan of Wolverine, I’ve been enjoying the series, especially the writing by Chris Condon and the artwork from Alessandro Cappuccio and Derek Lins. Now that the Ultimate Endgame event is happening, the Ultimate books are nearing their conclusion, and Ultimate Wolverine #13 begins the final story arc. While the issue is enjoyable, it mostly serves to fill time until the story really gets going.

While Ultimate Wolverine has had some good parts, a lot of it has felt like unnecessary padding. Looking back on the series, there are definitely highlights, but it often seems like the writer didn’t have enough story to tell. This issue continues that problem. It begins after the events of Ultimate Wolverine #12, which introduced an interesting new situation for Wolverine, but the issue quickly abandons that setup for an overly long fight between Wolverine and Ursa Major.

Rating: 2.5 out of 5

Pros Cons
The art is great The fight goes on way too long
The beginning and end of the book are interesting Not enough actual story to be considered a great comic

I’m honestly a little confused by the latest issue. We’re so close to the end, and it felt odd to dedicate valuable space to a fight that didn’t really advance the plot. It was fun to watch, sure, but it’s hard to see the point of it. I kept wondering why we were getting this action sequence instead of more setup for the finale. The beginning and end of the book do a little to prepare us, but it doesn’t feel like nearly enough to really get me excited for what’s coming.

The Fight Is Filler but It Looks Amazing At Least

Domenico Carbone’s artwork in this issue is stunning. Even though some readers aren’t thrilled with the storylines, the art in Ultimate Wolverine is consistently praised, and this issue is no exception. Carbone delivers a truly impressive fight sequence, which almost makes up for the fact that this issue doesn’t really advance the overall plot. Wolverine has faced many tough opponents, but this battle is arguably the most exciting and well-drawn in the entire Ultimate Wolverine series.

Carbone’s artwork is incredibly detailed and full of energy, making the fight scenes thrilling and clear. Though the colors by Bryan Valenza are a bit dim, the strong linework more than compensates. The fight might be longer than necessary, but that’s not a reflection on Carbone’s skill. He delivers fantastic panels and perfectly captures the rage of both Wolverine and Ursa Major. Ultimately, this issue delivers classic Wolverine action, which is what makes it enjoyable despite being a standalone story.

Look, Ultimate Wolverine #13 was fun, honestly. But it felt… unnecessary. It’s like a really good wrestling match that doesn’t advance any story – all action, no point. I was really hoping this issue would hook me, you know? Something I couldn’t put down. It just didn’t quite get there. I enjoy the series overall, but moments like these make me wonder what exactly keeps me coming back.

Ultimate Wolverine #13 is on sale now.
