Ultimate Wolverine Gets a New Costume With a Special Link to the X-Men’s Past

In the latest Marvel comics, Logan, better known as Wolverine, switches to a revamped version of his Ultimate Wolverine suit as he sets out to avenge the villains who deceived him and caused him to betray his friends. The Ultimate Wolverine is the newest member in Marvel’s Ultimate Universe, showcasing one of Marvel’s most revered characters, but unlike his usual alliance with the X-Men, Wolverine was transformed into the Winter Soldier. However, when all seemed lost for Wolverine, his friends from the Opposition managed to break his brainwashing. Now, Wolverine seeks retribution, and so a costume upgrade is in order.

WARNING: Spoilers for Ultimate Wolverine #8 below.

In simpler terms, the eighth issue of “Ultimate Wolverine” is penned by Chris Condon, Alessandro Cappuccio, Bryan Valenza, and VC’s Cory Petit. The story focuses on Wolverine leading a team similar to Suicide Squad called Strike Team X from the Opposition, which includes characters like Kitty Pryde, Gambit, Black Widow, Abigail Brand, Sabretooth, and Beast. Their mission is to infiltrate a facility on Snake Island within the Eurasian Republic to rescue imprisoned mutants. The narrative also offers a reflective moment with Wolverine, as he contemplates his reflection in his mask and costume, questioning his own worthiness of salvation due to feeling transformed into a heartless creature. However, it seems that others still view him as worthy, leading up to the reveal of his new suit’s connection to a notable X-Men location from his past.

Wolverine Changes His Ultimate Costume To Honor Krakoa

In the past, Wolverine fought alongside a comrade hailing from Genosha, an island that carries significant weight in the X-Men’s history. Over time, Genosha has functioned as both a sanctuary and battleground for many of the X-Men’s most significant conflicts. Fans of X-Men ’97 may recall that Genosha was the tragic site where hundreds of mutants, including Madelyne Pryor and Gambit, lost their lives during an assault by Sentinels. This narrative stems from a storyline penned by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely in New X-Men.

A resident of Genosha shared with Wolverine an ancient custom lasting a millennium. In this rite, Genoshans transitioned into adulthood by performing an exorcism. This process helped them discard their past, resulting in rejuvenation. Those who skipped it were condemned to a state of limbo, deemed impure and vulnerable to demons. The ritual entailed shedding their garments and smearing themselves with chalk, signifying purification. They consumed a fungus inducing hallucinations, then ventured into the wilderness for self-confrontation.

As a die-hard film enthusiast, I find myself echoing the actions of Wolverine in this unique way. He ceremoniously adorns himself and select parts of his attire with chalk – a symbolic act to purge the dark deeds he was compelled to commit as the Winter Soldier. In his own words, “I yearn for redemption, freedom, and vengeance.

A significant aspect of revamping his “Ultimate Wolverine” outfit involves adapting elements that were previously altered by the Eurasian Republic and claiming them as his own. The result is a large, white X emblazoned on the center of his suit, which is drawn using white chalk. This design is particularly appropriate for Wolverine, who serves as an icon for the X-Men.

As I stepped foot inside the island’s chilling facility, I found myself in a haunting scene of carnage, with every soul except one – Warren Worthington, better known as Angel among X-Men enthusiasts. However, this Angel was far from the golden-haired, piercing-eyed hero fans are accustomed to. The Eurasian Republic’s Directorate X had gotten their hands on him too, it seems, and he’d undergone a transformation reminiscent of the Angel Program. His natural wings were gone, replaced by mechanical ones that bore an eerie resemblance to his metamorphosis into Death, Apocalypse’s Horseman. It was a chilling reminder that even the mightiest of heroes can fall prey to sinister experiments.
