Ultimates Introduces Two Classic Avengers (And One Classic X-Men Villain)

In every installment, The Ultimates consistently escalates, reaching new heights. Its initial thirteen issues brought forth an astounding array of heroes, ranging from established Avengers such as She-Hulk, Ant-Man, and the Wasp, to lesser-known characters like Luke Cage and America Chavez. What’s more, these characters have been given a unique twist for the Ultimate Universe, such as Ultimate Hawkeye being a completely new character named Charli Ramsey. Issue #14 further expanded its roster, introducing not only two iconic Avengers but also one of the X-Men’s most formidable adversaries. The Ultimate Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver have now joined the fray, and they did so under the guidance and control of Emma Frost, known as the White Queen.

The Twins are Back in Town

The Ultimates are causing quite a stir as they stand against the system, and their popularity is growing day by day. Even those who were previously considered untouchable have begun to quake at the consequences they’re causing. To eliminate the Ultimates permanently, the CEO of Roxxon convened a meeting with the leaders from Alchemax, Hammer, A.I.M., and Midas Inc. They’ve been asked to share the costs because they’ve hired Emma Frost, founder of Frost’s School for Troubled Youth. This school is a twisted version of Xavier’s school for mutant children in another universe. Instead of teaching them to be heroes, Emma prepares her students as weapons for the elite members of the Hellfire Club. Her pupils have never failed at their missions, and they’ve been sent to deal with the Ultimates, dispatching two of her most skilled students for this task.

Discussing the Ultimates, against Captain America’s caution, Hawkeye and he infiltrated a Roxxon power facility. They swiftly dealt with the guards and workers, but as Cap was about to warn Hawkeye of their reckless actions, Quicksilver unexpectedly tackled him at four times the speed of sound. While young Quicksilver pummeled Captain America with rapid-fire punches, nearly imperceptible to the touch, Scarlet Witch appeared from above. Utilizing her power over probability, she destroyed Hawkeye’s gear, and unfortunately for them, they were not very accurate without aim assistance. The Ultimates suffered a crushing defeat, but they underestimated their adversaries, and it’s unwise to toy with Captain America. Steve managed to knock out Wanda, and when Pietro retaliated by focusing on Cap, Hawkeye detonated the pipeline, covering Quicksilver in crude oil. Due to his incredible speed, the fuel ignited instantly upon friction. The flames consumed Quicksilver’s oxygen, causing him to faint. Captain America and Hawkeye emerged victorious by a hair’s breadth, leaving them wondering how to handle these superpowered, evidently villain-trained teenagers.

New Ultimates or New Enemies?

The young siblings Wanda and Pietro have found themselves under the care of the Ultimates, but it’s uncertain how they will be utilized. Given their youth, estimated to be no older than fourteen or fifteen, they’ve been molded by Emma Frost’s corrupt institution since they could walk, having been “rescued” from a Eurasian weapons lab earlier. The fact that Emma Frost runs such a child soldier camp is already alarming, but if she has more powerful children like these two under her control, the situation could quickly become dire for the Ultimates. It remains to be seen what they will do with the so-called “wonder twins.” Naturally, they aim to win them over, but will the Ultimates agree to send minors into the conflict they’re engaged in? That is, if they can reach these children at all; their minds may already be tainted by years of indoctrination from the Hellfire Club. They might even feign reform to bring down the Ultimates.

By the close of the day, I’m absolutely thrilled about Wanda and Quicksilver entering the comic series, though they aren’t heroes at this moment. To begin with, they didn’t leap straight into heroism as Avengers, instead opting for a heroic path after their villainous past. Most likely, this pattern will repeat in The Ultimates, and truthfully, I can hardly contain my excitement to witness their future actions.
