Ultras – REVIEW

Let’s be honest, our 5-a-side football team wasn’t very good. We came close to winning once, losing a 2-1 game 5-0. We were so bad that even our goalkeeper missed when trying to hide his frustration! It’s no surprise nobody came to watch us play. In contrast, ‘Ultras‘ are some of the most dedicated fans you’ll find anywhere in the world. Director Ragnhild Ekner, who is herself an IFK Goteborg Ultra, explores the reasons behind this strong support in countries like Sweden, Indonesia, and Argentina, suggesting it’s a way of rebelling against political and economic systems.

Those crazy Ultras …..

The film examines various groups of dedicated football fans, known as Ultras, and highlights their elaborate displays called ‘Tifos’. These Tifos are massive, fan-created banners – one was even said to be the largest red flag displayed since Meghan Markle joined the Royal Family. Creating these displays is a lengthy and demanding process, but the results are often incredibly inventive and well-coordinated, with some, like a functioning fruit machine with moving parts, being truly astonishing.

The documentary relies heavily on fans sharing their stories, revealing the deeply personal connections they have with their teams – for some, it’s a way to honor loved ones lost, like a mother who joined a supporters’ group to feel closer to her son. While highlighting the passionate, almost tribal nature of these fan groups, the film also briefly acknowledges the reputation for violence associated with football fans, including a particularly shocking incident in Egypt where rival fans were tragically attacked and killed in the stands.

Even with its flaws, Ultras really feels like a tribute to those incredibly passionate football fans. And thankfully, it’s a pretty brisk watch at just 90 minutes long!
