Unable to install security updates after recently installing Windows 11? You’re not alone

As someone who has seen their fair share of software glitches and bugs, I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu when hearing about the latest Windows 11 issue. It seems that Microsoft is once again serving us a slice of “software pie” with a side of unexpected issues.

If you’ve just set up Windows 11 and are encountering issues with installing newer security patches, don’t worry, many users have faced this issue too. It appears that a glitch in the latest Windows 11 installation files is causing all subsequent security updates to halt during the installation process, leaving your system stuck on an older version of the Windows 11 security update.

Microsoft has acknowledged the problem and explains that it arises from utilizing Windows 11 installation media containing the October 2024 or November 2024 security patch. In essence, if you’ve installed Windows 11 using the installation tool within the past few months, there’s a possibility you won’t be able to apply newer security updates at present.

Here’s what Microsoft says on the Windows 11 24H2 known issues website:

During the installation of Windows 11, version 24H2 using media (like CDs or USB drives), there’s a chance your device could end up unable to receive additional security updates from Windows. This happens specifically when you create the installation media to include the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates. These updates were released between October 8, 2024 and November 12, 2024. However, this issue doesn’t occur if you install these updates via Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog website directly on your device.

The company advises they’re working on a solution for the current problem, and in the meantime, users should refrain from using any Windows 11 setup files containing the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates. Therefore, if you plan to perform a fresh installation of Windows 11 at this moment, search for setup files with the September 2024 or December 2024 security patches instead.

If you’re encountering trouble installing recent security updates and haven’t found a solution on the known issues website, you might want to attempt using the “Fix Windows Update” button found in the Recovery page within the Windows Settings app. Some users have reported success with this method, so it could potentially help resolve your issue.

Using the official Windows 11 ISO tool, you can produce an image that doesn’t contain the latest security updates. This means it is secure to employ this tool if your goal is to create a pristine Windows 11 installation image at this moment.
