Uncharted 4 Director Left Naughty Dog Because He Was “Working Hard at Something That Wasn’t Mine”

I was surprised to hear from Bruce Straley, the director of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, because he left Naughty Dog way back in 2017 and hadn’t really said much about it until now. He recently spoke with Polygon and finally shared what led him to leave the studio after 18 years – it’s interesting to finally hear his side of the story!

Straley explained his decision to leave Naughty Dog by saying he felt like he was going through the motions, constantly answering the same questions. He realized this repetition wasn’t healthy for his creativity and that he needed fresh challenges and opportunities to express himself.

After 18 years with the company, Straley felt it was time to move on. He believed he’d been crucial in developing the brand and its games, and he valued his time with the teams. However, he found himself repeating the same answers and felt stuck in a pattern created by the type of games they were making – a pattern he himself had helped establish.

Honestly, I felt like I’d been here before – stuck doing the same thing over and over. My brain just doesn’t handle that well. I really need something fresh, a new challenge to sink my teeth into. It’s not that there weren’t possibilities, but it was frustrating putting so much effort into something that didn’t feel like my project, you know?

Honestly, I always got the feeling that Neil Druckmann leaving Naughty Dog had a lot to do with him wanting to work on projects that were truly his. He definitely appreciated being well-compensated, but I think he really needed to create something new, explore fresh ideas, and build a team around his vision. It seemed like he wanted to be fully invested in something he owned, and that wasn’t really happening at Naughty Dog anymore.

He explained it boiled down to a simple question: Did he want to keep working for someone else, dedicating his energy to creating ideas and characters that could potentially become a franchise? While he’d been well-compensated and appreciated in his previous role, he felt it was time to venture out on his own, develop his own ideas, and build a new team. He acknowledged it could be a complete failure, but he preferred failing on his own terms, based on his own decisions.

Neil Straley’s next project is Coven of the Chicken Foot, a game where he’s experimenting with making companion characters feel more alive and responsive. Revealed at The Game Awards 2025, it follows an elderly witch and her animal companion as they explore a world filled with puzzles. The story centers on the witch’s commitment to her coven and the evolving bond she shares with the forest creature, who learns and develops based on its adventures.

Coven of the Chicken Foot is being developed for PC.
