Naughty Dog is known to be developing a game called Intergalactic, but recent reports suggest they’re also exploring the possibility of making another Uncharted game. According to gaming insider Tom Henderson, a recent post by the game’s creative director, Shaun Escayg, hints that the studio is “researching” a potential Uncharted 5.
Henderson also mentioned that Naughty Dog has considered making another Uncharted game before. He admitted he wasn’t sure what their current plans are, but confirmed that some planning for Uncharted 5 took place prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Henderson then talked about the overall trends in the gaming industry, pointing out that many companies seem to be focusing on established franchises instead of taking risks with new ideas. He compared this to Bungie, suggesting that a new Destiny game would be their most reliable option, similar to how Naughty Dog would likely prioritize new installments in The Last of Us and Uncharted series.
The problem we’re facing now is that games like Uncharted 5 are seen as guaranteed successes, and many studios will likely play it safe with similar projects. It’s similar to what we’re seeing with Bungie and Marathon – that game will probably continue to do well for a while. But their next sure thing will be Destiny 3, and for Naughty Dog, it’s clearly The Last of Us Part 3 and another Uncharted game.
The conversation started with an Instagram post featuring a seemingly normal vacation photo. The picture showed an old cannon overlooking a city by the sea, with the simple caption “Research…” Escayg didn’t explain what the research involved, but the photo’s atmosphere reminded many people of the potential setting for a new Uncharted game, possibly Uncharted 5.
Currently, neither Naughty Dog nor Sony has confirmed anything about the future of the franchise. They appear to be entirely focused on finishing development of Intergalactic.
The most recent main installment in the Uncharted series was Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, released in 2016. The game follows Nathan Drake on one final, large-scale adventure, exploring complex topics like the lingering effects of his difficult childhood and the challenges of balancing adventure with his family life with Elena.
In 2017, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End received a standalone expansion called Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. This installment stars Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross, who team up to find the Tusk of Ganesh within the ruins of the Hoysala Kingdom. The game also offered players more freedom in its second half, allowing them to overcome challenges in their own way.
