A Stephen King series from 2025 that doesn’t get enough recognition is a must-watch for fans of his classic novels, It and Firestarter.
I’m really enjoying HBO’s It: Welcome to Derry – it’s a huge hit and everyone seems to love it! But before this show came out, another Stephen King adaptation actually premiered earlier this year. It wasn’t quite the massive streaming sensation It: Welcome to Derry is, and it got a pretty average score of 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it was still worth checking out.
Even though it hasn’t been as popular as the HBO show, this series is worth watching. It’s actually been picked up for another season, making it the first Stephen King TV adaptation to get a second season in a long time.
If You Love Stephen King’s IT & Firestarter, You Must Watch The Institute On MGM+
If you enjoy Stephen King books like Firestarter and IT, you’ll likely love MGM+’s The Institute. It combines many of the familiar elements and themes that make his stories so captivating.
- Endangered children under the supervision of morally corrupt or negligent adults.
- Sinister government-funded organizations that exploit.
- Exploration of the frightening potential of psychic abilities.
As a big Stephen King fan, I’ve noticed something really cool across Firestarter, The Institute, and IT. All three stories center around kids who either have special powers – what some might call ‘the shining’ – or are just naturally gifted. While Firestarter and The Institute don’t have huge, otherworldly monsters like Pennywise in IT, they all share this heartbreaking theme of children being forced to grow up way too fast when faced with horrors they can’t even comprehend. And it’s really powerful to see how, especially in IT and The Institute, the strength of friendship is what ultimately helps these kids survive and fight back. It’s like their bond is their greatest weapon!
As a big Stephen King fan, I’ve noticed a really interesting connection between ‘The Shop’ in Firestarter and the Institute from the new MGM+ adaptation. Both groups seem to focus on experimenting with kids – either giving them powers or boosting the ones they already have. And it’s subtly suggested that both are tied to the government, acting like they’re doing terrible things for what they believe is a bigger, justifiable purpose. It’s a chilling parallel, honestly!
The Institute & It: Welcome To Derry Are Perfect Examples Of How Stephen King Shows Should Be Made
2025 has been a strong year for Stephen King adaptations, particularly on television. Following a slump after 2020’s The Outsider, most TV series based on his work hadn’t been well-received by critics or audiences. However, It: Welcome to Derry and The Institute have reversed this trend, earning both positive reviews and strong viewership. These shows signal a promising new chapter for Stephen King’s television adaptations, and future projects should take note of their success.
