Skybound has quickly become a major force in comics, particularly in 2025. This partnership with Image Comics is behind the incredibly popular Energon Universe series, delivering some of the best licensed comics we’ve seen in years. They’ve also had great success with their line of Universal Monsters comics, which feature the iconic creatures from classic horror films. Thanks to the financial success of titles like The Walking Dead and Invincible, Skybound can attract top creators, and that quality shows in books like the new Universal Monsters: Phantom of the Opera #1 – a beautifully illustrated reimagining of the beloved movie.
The first issue of Universal Monsters: Phantom of the Opera is created by Tyler Boss and Martin Simmonds, who together deliver a stunning reimagining of the classic story. With a strong history of excellent horror comics, this new book feels like a truly impressive addition to the genre.

This Is Phantom of the Opera By Way of Vertigo Comics
While Phantom of the Opera remains a classic Universal film, it’s not always a favorite among horror enthusiasts because it leans more towards gothic romance than traditional monster movies – the Phantom himself isn’t particularly monstrous. However, the artist, Boss, successfully brings out the horror elements of the story, imbuing it with the dark, atmospheric style of Vertigo comics from the mid-90s, which immediately draws the reader in. This adaptation of Phantom of the Opera expertly blends love and horror, and this first chapter perfectly captures the story’s gothic mood.
The story’s conversations and script effectively create the dark, suspenseful atmosphere the book needs. You’re quickly immersed in the world, and the author skillfully guides you through the plot. There are clever storytelling decisions throughout, particularly as the mystery unfolds, and the tension steadily builds. The author does a fantastic job portraying the relationships between the characters – the inspector and Christine, and the Phantom with the young woman. The strong dialogue and script really drew me in, allowing the artwork to truly shine.
Martin Simmond’s Art Is Perfect for This Issue

While the story is solid, it’s the artwork that truly elevates this comic. Martin Simmonds’ art is immediately captivating, with visible brushstrokes that pull you directly into the story’s setting – the atmospheric theaters and bygone nights of Paris. The comic perfectly embodies the visual style of gothic horror. The effective page layouts and focus on character expression are key to its success, giving the story a great pace and allowing Simmonds’ talent to shine.
What makes this book special is how well the art and story blend together. The Phantom of the Opera is a tale of love and obsession, and this version truly brings that world to life through stunning visuals. The artwork perfectly captures the story’s atmosphere, especially when the Phantom is first revealed—it’s genuinely unsettling. This is a beautiful new take on the classic, and the art is what makes it all so effective.
The first issue of Universal Monsters: The Phantom of the Opera is a surprisingly great adaptation of a classic Universal film – while people enjoy The Phantom of the Opera, the horror movie isn’t as popular as the musical. Boss and Simmonds have cleverly reimagined the story for comics, and it will be exciting to see where they take it. I was hesitant at first, but the artwork immediately grabbed my attention and kept me engaged throughout.
