Untitled John Wick Game Will Take Place Before the Start of the Movie Series, Says Studio CCO

Saber Interactive, the team behind action-packed games like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, announced their upcoming John Wick game last month, but details have been scarce. Recently, chief creative officer Tim Willits spoke with IGN and shared some new insights. He explained that the John Wick films already have a video game feel, and the goal is to make playing the game feel just as immersive as watching a movie from the series.

He explained that the John Wick films feel a lot like playing a video game – a series of challenges with waves of enemies, strong opponents, and a final boss battle, repeated throughout the story. He’s excited to translate that fast-paced action into a video game format, aiming for an experience that feels like watching one of the movies.

This gives us a general idea of how the game will be played. It seems like John Wick will complete missions and fight in different locations as he progresses through levels.

Willits has stated the game will explore John Wick’s life prior to the events of the first film. Players will experience a younger John Wick, likely before the tragic loss of his wife, which sets the stage for the first John Wick movie.

Willits confirmed the events take place before the first movie. He explained that viewers can figure this out from the trailer, where the character is getting fitted for a suit and appears younger.

Although details are still limited, this new game could finally show us what led the character to leave his life as an assassin. Because the game features a younger version of him, we can expect more intense and quick action. However, his inexperience might make his fighting style a bit rougher and less polished than what we’ve seen in the movies.

The new John Wick game was revealed with a short trailer showing John Wick getting his signature suit. The trailer also hinted at the action to come, focusing on intense, close-up fighting with grappling, takedowns, and using whatever’s around as weapons. It looks like players will be able to use their surroundings in fights too, like throwing enemies through car windows.

Currently, there’s no confirmed release date for the game, and Saber Interactive hasn’t announced which platforms it will be available on. However, because the initial trailer was shown during a PlayStation State of Play and featured footage from a PS5, a PlayStation release is confirmed. The announcement came about a month after Lionsgate’s Adam Fogelson mentioned plans for a high-quality John Wick game.
