Upcoming Horror TV Adaptation Could Beat Out A Classic 1994 Stephen King Show

Stephen King is widely considered the master of modern horror, but a new adaptation of one of his books might surpass even his popular 1994 TV series. He’s almost always the first author people think of when it comes to scary stories.

Stephen King has become a literary giant, writing an impressive 66 books. Beyond his writing, most of the movies and TV shows based on his work have also been well-received. Popular stories like ‘IT’ and ‘Carrie’ have even been adapted for the screen several times.

It’s great to see other horror writers getting recognition as well. Out of the eight most anticipated upcoming horror TV shows, only two are based on Stephen King’s work. What’s more, one of these new shows might even surpass King’s popular 1994 miniseries, The Stand.

Robert McCammon’s Swan Song Is Becoming A TV Show

Nearly four decades after its release, Robert McCammon’s novel Swan Song is being made into a TV series (according to MovieWeb). The story is set in a post-apocalyptic America following a nuclear war, where survivors struggle to navigate a dangerous landscape filled with both supernatural threats and ruthless bandits.

Russell Rothberg is taking on multiple roles on the show – he’ll be the writer, a co-executive producer, and the showrunner. Greg Nicotero will executive produce and also direct the first episode. Because the show was just announced recently, details are still limited.

Both Rotherberg and Nicotero are big fans of the original book and have said it greatly inspired their work. Because of this, they’re highly motivated to make the show a reality.

Swan Song & Stephen King’s The Stand Are Seminal Post-Apocalyptic Horror Books

The idea of worlds after a catastrophe feels timeless, but the kinds of disasters we imagine have shifted over the years. Especially since World War II, stories often center around apocalypses caused by war, like in novels such as Swan Song and Stephen King’s The Stand.

These aren’t the first stories to explore these themes, and many others like them exist. However, ‘The Stand’ and ‘Swan Song’ remain particularly impactful and well-known. ‘The Stand’ centers around a biological weapon created by the Department of Defense, and ‘Swan Song’ involves the use of US nuclear weapons.

It’s surprising that, despite numerous adaptations of Stephen King’s The Stand, Robert McCammon’s Swan Song hasn’t been made into a movie or TV show yet. While I’m a big Stephen King fan, I actually think Swan Song is the stronger novel, and I’m really hoping to see it adapted for the screen.

How The Swan Song TV Show Could Beat Out The 1994 Adaptation Of The Stand

While the 2020 miniseries of The Stand didn’t resonate with viewers, the 1994 adaptation remains a highly praised take on Stephen King’s novel. Many appreciate how closely it follows the book, along with strong performances from the cast and a memorable soundtrack. The 1994 version was also recognized by the industry, receiving six Emmy nominations and winning awards for Outstanding Makeup and Sound Mixing.

If the creators of the Swan Song TV show, Rothberg and Nicotero, succeed, their version could actually be better than the original Stephen King adaptation of The Stand. The original, while a classic, suffers from some awkward dialogue and visuals that haven’t aged well, and its jump-around storytelling didn’t quite hit the mark.

This miniseries is still very good, and I’ve enjoyed watching it repeatedly. My criticisms are meant to be constructive – I want to see it succeed. With a few improvements, like stronger visuals and a more dynamic script, Swan Song has the potential to be a truly great post-apocalyptic show, even surpassing the 1994 version of The Stand.
