Upcoming Indie Game Remnants of Yore Is a Delightful Mash-Up of Roguelike Action & Cozy Shopkeeping

I’ve been keeping an eye on this cool new indie game, Remnants of Yore, and it’s seriously taking off! It recently got funded on Kickstarter – they smashed their goal in just 24 hours, which is awesome. The developers are now getting ready to launch an Early Access version on Steam, and they’re planning a full console release sometime in 2026. I even got a sneak peek at the game with the developers themselves, and it looks like a really cozy and fun adventure!

In Remnants of Yore, you play as Yore, an adorable cat wizard! The game features a beautiful 3D pixel art style that really brings its fantastical world to life. However, things aren’t all sunshine and rainbows – Yore is stuck in a village plagued by a corrupted forest, and it’s up to them to fight back against the darkness. To make ends meet while trapped in town, Yore runs an abandoned antique shop. As someone who enjoys both shopkeeping simulations and roguelike gameplay, Remnants of Yore has definitely piqued my interest.

Remnants of Yore Offers Up Shopkeeping With a Haunted Twist

The creators of Remnants of Yore say their game is a blend of Hades, Stardew Valley, and Moonlighter – a combination that immediately grabbed my attention. I recently previewed the game and watched some footage, and I was instantly captivated when I saw the main character surfing across the map on a huge, magical book. But even if a wizard riding a flying book isn’t enough to pique your interest, there’s a lot more to this game that makes it worth keeping an eye on.

Remnants of Yore offers two main ways to play, with elements of a life and farming simulation woven in. You’ll establish a home in a previously deserted antique shop, and as you explore a blighted forest, you’ll discover valuable antiques and artifacts. Naturally, you can sell these finds to the townspeople to earn money. I was happy to find that managing the shop is quite detailed – you can control item prices and even see how customers react to them. Be careful not to overcharge, though, or you’ll definitely hear complaints!

If you enjoy a bit of unpredictability in your games, you’ll find it here. Many of the items you collect come from a blighted forest and contain spirits. You can choose to release these trapped spirits before selling the items, but the developers suggest there might be serious repercussions if you try to sell cursed items to the townspeople. I’m eager to find out exactly what those consequences will be!

Before you can start selling items, you’ll first need to explore the corrupted forest. Within it, Remnants of Yore features a challenging roguelike combat mode. This means you’ll battle enemies and find items in a world that changes with each playthrough.

Roguelike Combat Meets Life Sim Storytelling in Remnants of Yore

Venture into the vibrant forest to rescue the village and gather goods for your shop! These adventure runs are similar to games like Hades, but with a magical touch. As a wizard, you’ll fight dark spirits using spells. Discovering new spirits unlocks unique boons – special power-ups that help you progress. Each forest run is different, offering new ways to enhance your abilities and go further.

In addition to helpful bonuses, you can gather herbs to create new spells. Remnants of Yore seems to offer a lot of different ways to fight, so if you enjoy games with flexible combat and the freedom to choose your own strategy, this could be perfect for you.

Beyond fighting and shopping, Remnants of Yore truly shines with its story. A great action RPG lives and dies by its narrative, and this game promises a rich one. Every character you meet has their own daily routine and personal story to discover. Your choices and interactions with these characters will shape the plot and lead to multiple different endings in Remnants of Yore. I, for one, am a big fan of stories that change based on your decisions.

There’s a lot of excitement building for Remnants of Yore, especially with its Early Access launch on March 22nd. The game’s successful Kickstarter campaign proves people are really interested in seeing this project come to life. Having seen what the developers have created, I’m really looking forward to playing it myself! It looks like it could be a perfect blend of cozy gameplay and action RPG elements. You can try a free demo of Remnants of Yore right now, and the full Early Access version will be available on Steam on March 22nd.
