For years, a documentary about Star Trek: Voyager has been in development, and the team behind it is finally sharing an update with fans. The project, titled To The Journey – Looking Back At Star Trek: Voyager, launched in early 2021 with a crowdfunding campaign that quickly exceeded expectations. With official permission from the Star Trek franchise and a surge of donations, production began, and the filmmakers interviewed cast and crew members. A preview trailer was even released, suggesting the documentary would be a comprehensive look behind the scenes of the beloved series.
But that was years ago.

The team at To The Journey shared an update today explaining why the project is delayed. They’re facing difficulties releasing the DVD and Blu-ray due to issues with costs, licensing, and distribution. Specifically, they mentioned that rising fulfillment costs and inflation are major factors.
This documentary about Voyager is facing unexpected financial challenges despite raising a lot of money through crowdfunding, pre-orders, and merchandise sales. The team explains they’ve already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars fulfilling rewards promised to their backers, covering things like production and shipping. On top of that, about 25% inflation has significantly increased their overall costs.
Regarding getting the film released, the team says Paramount declined to distribute it because they couldn’t agree on the initial costs. Paramount is reportedly asking for a substantial upfront license fee—over $100,000—before allowing a wide release, which is complicating plans for a DVD/Blu-ray release. Additionally, a similar documentary about Voyager has appeared on YouTube, using old interview and behind-the-scenes footage. The To The Journey team has informed Paramount about this competing documentary, as it’s causing confusion during negotiations with potential distributors, but so far, Paramount hasn’t taken any action.

Despite a lot of effort from its supporters, the documentary To The Journey is still facing delays. The filmmakers say they’re still negotiating and working to resolve the issue, and they appreciate the fans’ continued support and the film’s connection to the Star Trek community.
