Upcoming Star Wars Game Could Be the Closest Thing to a Rogue One‑Style Game We’ll Ever Get

Many fans consider *Rogue One* a standout *Star Wars* film, and it even led to the popular TV series *Andor*, which tells the story leading up to the movie. People appreciated its fresh approach to the classic franchise, enjoying its unique style and the memorable characters. It feels like a great new path for *Star Wars*, offering stories focused on characters outside of the Jedi and showing a grittier side of the galaxy. While a video game directly based on *Rogue One* isn’t planned, *Star Wars: Zero Company* seems to capture a similar feel.

Star Wars: Zero Company‘s Ragtag Group of Heroes

I was super excited to hear about *Zero Company* at Star Wars Celebration Japan! It’s a new turn-based tactics game being made by Bit Reactor, Respawn Entertainment, and Lucasfilm Games. Honestly, I love this genre – games like *X-Com* and *Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew* really prove that tactics games are perfect for telling stories about a ragtag team of heroes, and I’m hoping *Zero Company* delivers on that!

We’re still learning about *Zero Company*, but so far, it looks like a compelling story. Players will experience the Clone Wars as Hawks, a former Republic Officer who unexpectedly leads *Zero Company*.

You’ll fight alongside a diverse crew of characters from across the entire *Star Wars* universe, including droids and Jedi. This gives you lots of choices when building your team for battle. And, like *X-Com*, the game features permadeath on harder settings, making the connections you form with your crew members even more meaningful.

Currently, the game *Zero Company* will feature a diverse cast including Trick, a Clone Trooper; Tel-Rea Vokoss, a Jedi Padawan; Cly Kullervo, a Mandalorian warrior; Luco Bronc, a former Umbaran soldier; and an astromech droid. Players will be able to customize these characters, and even design and add their own squad members. This ability to create custom characters could be crucial in permadeath mode, where mistakes can have lasting consequences.

The large number of characters will really capture the feel of *Rogue One*. While the game still needs a compelling story to keep players engaged, if you enjoy ensemble casts in *Star Wars*, *Zero Company* seems like a great fit.

Zero Company‘s Secret War

The connections between *Zero Company* and *Rogue One* go beyond just having a lot of characters. While details about *Zero Company* are still emerging, everything Respawn and Bit Reactor have shared suggests a hidden conflict. Their initial announcement described it as “a war you don’t see, the one fought in the shadows – the war beneath the war.”

If you’ve watched *Rogue One*, you’ll likely notice similarities. *Zero Company* isn’t a direct copy, but it’s heavily inspired by that film. It’s interesting because the Clone Wars period has already been covered a lot in *Star Wars*, especially through Dave Filoni’s animated series. The challenge will be creating a fresh and engaging experience for players that feels natural within this well-known era.

Respawn Entertainment has created a successful *Star Wars Jedi* series, which is great news. Bit Reactor is a new studio, so we don’t know as much about their storytelling abilities yet. However, with Respawn supporting them, they’re in a strong position to succeed.

The game’s announcement also says our decisions will visibly change the galaxy on the in-game map. While this could potentially feel out of place given the game’s setting, it also sounds like a cool way to see how your actions affect the universe around you.

There are minor spoilers for *Rogue One* ahead. One thing that film lacked was showing its characters the consequences of their actions. The ending felt less powerful because of this. It’s interesting, then, to see the developers of *Zero Company* emphasizing how players will see the results of their mission. The question is whether this will make the story more or less compelling. Given the established rules of the *Star Wars* universe, it’s also unclear if Bit Reactor and Respawn will be able to take big risks with the story.

Zero Company looks like a really exciting new project for the Star Wars universe. While there have been several good Star Wars strategy games before, Zero Company offers a different approach with its turn-based gameplay, which could be a welcome change. If you enjoyed Rogue One or X-Com, Zero Company is one to watch as its 2026 release date approaches.
