As a huge Tomb Raider fan, I was really excited to hear the latest news about the new game in development! It’s amazing to think the series started way back in 1996 with the original on Sega Saturn – it’s truly become one of the most beloved franchises ever. We’ve seen so many great games, plus movies, and now there’s even an Amazon Prime series with Sophie Turner coming up! It’s been a while since a proper, big-budget Tomb Raider game though. The last one, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, came out in 2018 from Square Enix Europe. Since then, we’ve had a mobile game, a couple of remasters, and a collection, but nothing completely new. Thankfully, a new game started development in 2022, and just recently, we got a really interesting update about it!
In late October 2025, Amazon laid off 14,000 employees, which heavily affected Amazon Game Studios. Despite these cuts, development of the next Tomb Raider game is still moving forward, according to Variety. The game, originally announced in 2022, was initially feared to be cancelled, but it seems to have been saved. Unfortunately, Amazon Games’ planned Lord of the Rings MMORPG wasn’t so lucky and has been cancelled. Fans of Lara Croft can rest easy knowing her next adventure is still in development, though its release date is currently unknown.
Amazon Games’ Mass Firings Won’t Impact Next Tomb Raider Game

Crystal Dynamics is creating the next Tomb Raider game, and Amazon Games will handle its release. While details about the story and gameplay are still under wraps, the game is expected on multiple platforms. Development has been underway for over three years, so fans are hoping it’s close to being finished, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet. The game will continue Lara Croft’s adventures, focusing on puzzle-solving, exploration, and combat against dangerous foes. Crystal Dynamics is building the game with Unreal Engine 5.
Whether facing dangerous adventures or challenging trials, Lara Croft is prepared for anything.

The new Tomb Raider game will feature a compelling, story-focused single-player experience, similar to previous installments. Crystal Dynamics, the game’s developer, is thrilled to be collaborating with Amazon Studios. After the recent layoffs at the publisher, founded in 2012, many thought all ongoing projects would be cancelled. However, Tomb Raider and March of Giants, which recently finished its closed alpha testing, will continue development. According to Bloomberg, Amazon Games is reorganizing to enhance its Luna cloud gaming service, with a particular interest in simpler games and those utilizing artificial intelligence.
Fans of the Tomb Raider series are excited to hear it will continue after a long wait since Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018. While that game did well, Crystal Dynamics, then owned by Square Enix Europe, wasn’t fully in charge of development, and it tied into the Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft series on Netflix. Now that Crystal Dynamics (which is now part of Embracer Group, a Swedish company) owns the Tomb Raider franchise, there’s renewed optimism because of the studio’s deep history with the games.
