US Bitcoin ETFs now hold more BTC than Satoshi Nakamoto

As a seasoned researcher with over two decades of experience in the financial industry, this recent development has left me both astounded and amused. The rapid growth of US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) is nothing short of extraordinary – they’ve managed to surpass the estimated holdings of Satoshi Nakamoto within a year since their launch.

A significant achievement has been reached with U.S.-based Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), as their combined Bitcoin holdings surpass the amount owned by the creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto.

In a recent update on December 6th, Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas reported that for the first time, Bitcoin ETFs collectively hold over 1.1 million Bitcoins. This milestone was highlighted by market observer Shaun Edmondson following the initial launch of spot Bitcoin ETF trading in the US back in January.

Balchunas commented that U.S. spot ETFs have recently surpassed Satoshi’s total Bitcoin holdings to now possess over 1.1 million Bitcoins, making them the world’s largest holders of Bitcoin. Remarkably, these ETFs are less than a year old, equivalent to infants in age. This is truly astonishing.

Based on the data from HODL15Capital, my analysis reveals that as of December 5th, these spot Bitcoin ETFs were holding approximately 1,103,965 Bitcoins, which aligns with Edmondson’s insights.

How much Bitcoin does Satoshi hold?

The person known as Satoshi Nakamoto is the mysterious inventor behind Bitcoin, having executed the initial Bitcoin transaction way back in January 2009.

Besides being the inventor of Bitcoin, Nakamoto is also recognized as one of the biggest owners of Bitcoin, with experts estimating approximately 1.1 million Bitcoins are held in accounts linked to Nakamoto, which equates to about 5.2% of the total 21 million Bitcoins that will ever be in circulation.

Based on information provided by Balchunas, the collective ownership of Bitcoin by U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs currently surpasses that of Binance, the global crypto exchange, by 42%. Furthermore, these ETFs now possess 63% more Bitcoin than MicroStrategy, a significant corporate holder of BTC.

Mike Novogratz says Nakamoto is no longer alive

As a cryptocurrency analyst, I’ve observed over the years that some investigators, such as those at HBO, have made concerted efforts to unmask the enigmatic figure behind Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin. However, there are persisting theories that this elusive innovator may no longer be among us.

In a recent interview with CNBC on December 5th, Michael Novogratz, CEO of Galaxy Digital (a company involved not only in crypto investments but also the operation of a Bitcoin ETF), stated his belief that Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, is no longer alive.

If Satoshi Nakamoto were still alive (though I believe he isn’t), I imagine he would be grinning ear-to-ear right now, as Bitcoin surpassed $100,000 for the very first time on December 5th. (Novogratz’s statement)
