Did you know PlayStation is enjoying its 30th anniversary in USA today?

These celebrations can often feel prolonged, thanks to the gap that once existed between new hardware releases. For instance, we previously celebrated PlayStation’s 30th anniversary last year, as it was released a year ahead in its home country, Japan.

To celebrate the special event, analyst Mat Piscatella from Circana has unveiled a ranking of the top 20 best-selling PlayStation games across all platforms in the United States.

The findings might astonish you as they’re far more current than you might expect, with regard to both dollar and unit sales. While the rise in game prices significantly impacts the former, the modernity of the list also applies to the latter.

So, what are the results?

Indeed, it’s not unexpected that Grand Theft Auto V holds the record for both highest revenue and unit sales, a feat that doesn’t come as much of a shock.

Minecraft is second in terms of units but seventh in dollar sales, due to its lower price.

A significant portion of the top ten includes numerous installments from the Call of Duty series, with Red Dead Redemption 2 being another notable inclusion. As for PlayStation 2 games, only Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City are present in the top ten.

As a devoted gaming enthusiast, I must acknowledge the exceptional contributions Sony has made in recent times with their exclusive titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man, God of War, and The Last of Us. These games have truly stood out amongst the crowd, often sharing top billing with Call of Duty. (Indeed, it’s not hard to understand why Sony felt strongly about that Activision acquisition.)

Let’s highlight the impressive sales of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, even though it has only been two years since its release. The high sales can be attributed not just to its popularity but also its higher selling price compared to many other games in the market. However, this observation could apply to numerous titles, some that don’t have the same selling price advantage.

It’s important to mention that the games that come with hardware bundles are not part of this list, which is why you won’t find titles like Gran Turismo 3 here.

The key point here is how contemporary and up-to-date these lists appear, reflecting the significant growth of the industry since the times of PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2. With only the classic GTA releases making an appearance, it’s evident that not much else from that era is still relevant in today’s market.
