Valve Has No Current Plans for a Steam Deck Successor

Valve recently showed off some new hardware, but a follow-up to the Steam Deck isn’t coming immediately. In an interview with IGN, Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais explained that the Steam Deck’s success has opened doors for devices like the Steam Machine. He also emphasized that Valve isn’t focused on just making slightly more powerful versions of existing hardware; they want to innovate beyond simple performance upgrades.

Valve is focusing on significant upgrades to the internal components and overall design of the next Steam Deck. They have a clear vision for the future device, but currently, no available hardware on the market quite meets their standards for performance and features.

So, everyone’s been asking about a Steam Deck 2, right? Well, I heard from Valve that they are thinking about what comes next, but they’re not just going to release something for the sake of it. They want to make sure any new version is a significant performance jump – something that justifies it being a whole new product instead of just a small tweak. They’re really focused on making it worthwhile for players.

We’re aiming for a significant leap in performance, not just a small improvement of 20-50% with the same battery life. We’ve been focusing on upcoming processor and design improvements to figure out what the next Steam Deck should be capable of. Currently, there aren’t any processors available that would allow us to create a truly next-generation Steam Deck experience.

Griffais points out that the upcoming Steam Machine shares similarities with the Steam Deck in that both provide a standard hardware foundation for game developers. He believes this consistency will be a key benefit for developers. Valve is also extending its Steam Deck Verified program to include compatibility ratings for games on the Steam Machine, which will be helpful for users.

According to Griffais, every Steam Deck offers the same level of performance and can play all games available on Steam, including those verified for the device. A key goal was to ensure that setting up a Steam Deck wasn’t complicated by having to choose which games to exclude or make other limiting decisions.

We believe having a single performance standard is a real benefit of our product. It will also help developers optimize graphics settings, as they can concentrate on meeting just one specification, which will be a positive outcome.
