Valve recently released its Steam Deck VR headset, leading many to anticipate a new VR game developed by the company to boost sales. However, in a recent interview with RoadToVR, Valve stated they are not currently working on a new VR title.
The question arose because of Valve’s experience with virtual reality, starting with the Valve Index and followed quickly by the impressive game Half-Life: Alyx, which demonstrated what the headset could do. Valve also has a habit of releasing new software, often a set of smaller games, alongside its new hardware.
Beyond Half-Life: Alyx, Valve has a history of demonstrating its hardware with free games. Following the launch of the Steam Deck in 2022, they released Aperture Desk Job, another free title designed to showcase the handheld’s features. The game puts players in the role of an Aperture Science employee, completing simple tasks and interacting with buttons to experience what the Steam Deck can do.
Just announced yesterday, the Steam Frame is a new headset with two high-resolution LCD screens (2160×2160) that can refresh between 72 and 144 times per second, adjusting to the game you’re playing. It also includes built-in stereo speakers and four cameras with infrared lights to track your surroundings. Unlike the Valve Index, the Steam Frame is completely wireless and doesn’t require a PC connection to play games.
The Steam Frame will run on a powerful Snapdragon 8 Series processor and have 16 GB of RAM. You’ll be able to choose between 256 GB and 1 TB of storage, and both options include a microSD card slot for adding even more space. Valve estimates the headset’s battery will last about 40 hours on a single charge, thanks to its 21.6 Wh lithium-ion battery.
Valve describes the Steam Link as a device designed for streaming games. This means it’s meant to work with a more powerful computer or console that actually runs the games. You can stream almost any game from your Steam library to it, and it’s compatible with older and newer Steam Controllers, as well as the Steam Deck.
I was so excited when Valve announced not just the headset, but also the Steam Machine and a brand new Steam Controller! The Steam Machine is basically a gaming PC they’ve designed to be super easy to set up – you can even use it as a regular PC running SteamOS, which is built on Linux. And the new controller? It’s packed with cool stuff like really detailed rumble feedback and motion controls thanks to a built-in gyro. It all sounds amazing!
