Valve recently updated the Steam Deck, and owners are calling the changes significant and long-awaited. With the next version of the Steam Deck still a couple of years off, Valve has time to continue improving the handheld console. They’ve been releasing updates since 2022, but the latest one is getting particularly positive feedback from users on the Steam Deck Reddit page.
Valve recently released a new Beta update for the Steam Deck, bringing a lot of changes. A major part of this update focuses on fixing the Steam Deck Verification system, which hasn’t been very accurate lately. Since 2022, many PC games have been marked as ‘Verified’ for the Steam Deck, even though they don’t run well on the handheld. For example, Borderlands 4 was recently verified despite clearly not being optimized for the device.
What’s New With the Steam Deck Update
Valve has been listening to user feedback and is addressing the issue of accurately reporting game performance on the Steam Deck. Now, when writing or updating a Steam User Review, you can specify your Steam Deck’s hardware specifications. Additionally, you can choose to share anonymized framerate data. This data, which won’t be linked to your account but will identify the hardware it came from, will help Valve understand how well games work on the Steam Deck. This feature is currently in beta testing.
One Steam Deck user shared on Reddit that they believe this update is a significant improvement. They explained that many people have been unhappy with the ‘Verified’ program recently, but this change feels like a positive step. Now, users can also provide specific feedback if they don’t agree with a game’s ‘Verified’ rating.
Users are excited about recent improvements, with one saying the changes were “much-needed” and another noting the Steam Deck experience is “getting better and better.”
This update includes several other enhancements and bug fixes. Now, when connected to the internet, the Steam Deck will show the highest quality image for games featured in the Recent Games section. A problem that stopped some users from installing games with large libraries has also been resolved. While other fixes are included, these are the most significant improvements.
