Valve’s Launch Plans for Steam Machine Have Been Delayed Due to Surge in RAM Prices

Valve has announced a delay in the release of its new hardware. The company originally planned to reveal launch dates and prices for the Steam Machine, Steam Deck, and Steam Controller by now. However, rising memory costs have forced them to adjust their plans. Valve hasn’t announced new dates yet, but they still aim to launch all three devices in the first six months of 2026.

Valve confirmed they still plan to release all three products in the first six months of the year. However, they’re still working out the final prices and release dates, and want to be sure before making an announcement, as these things can change. They promise to share updates as soon as everything is finalized.

Valve has shared more information about the Steam Machine and Steam Frame in a question-and-answer format. They confirmed that the Steam Frame will support streaming services beyond Steam’s Remote Play, using its built-in web browser. The VR headset won’t initially work with the Valve Index’s base stations for precise tracking, but the Steam Frame’s flexible design allows users to create their own solutions to add this and other features.

Valve has announced it will share the design files and specifications for the Steam Machine’s faceplate, allowing other companies to create their own custom versions. Additionally, the Steam Machine’s RAM (DDR5 SODIMMs) and storage (NVMe 2230 or 2280 SSDs) will be easily accessible for upgrades.

Valve made its announcement shortly after AMD CEO Lisa Su stated during an earnings call that the Steam Machine would launch “early this year.” Dr. Su also predicted that AMD’s custom chip business would see a significant decrease in revenue, as current gaming consoles continue to be popular.

Game revenue jumped 50% compared to last year, reaching $843 million. Sales of our customized chips also increased year-over-year, though they dipped slightly from the previous quarter, which was anticipated. Looking ahead to 2026, we forecast a substantial double-digit percentage decrease in revenue from these customized chips, as the current generation of gaming consoles is nearing the end of its successful run. Valve is also on schedule to start delivering its Steam Machine, powered by AMD processors, early this year.

Valve hasn’t said much about how much Steam Machines will cost, but they confirmed in November that pre-built models will be priced similarly to custom-built PCs with comparable performance. According to Valve’s Pierre-Loup Griffais, their goal is to match the price of building a PC with the same level of power.
