Warning: Spoilers ahead for Stranger Things season 5, Volume 1.
It wasn’t surprising that Vecna is back in Stranger Things season 5, but his latest scheme is quite complicated. The first part of the final season of Netflix’s popular Stranger Things is finally here, and it delivers! After a three-year wait, fans are catching up with everyone from the Hawkins group.
Season 5 of Stranger Things has something for every fan, whether you’re invested in Eleven and Hopper’s story, or following Mike, Lucas, Dustin, Will, Robin, Steve, Jonathan, and Nancy. This season also keeps the characters together more than in the previous one, making the danger feel more immediate and the plot move more quickly.
Despite the positive developments, there’s a serious threat looming. The main villain from Stranger Things, Henry Creel, also known as Vecna or 001, has returned and is even stronger. He’s using kidnapped children to amplify his powers and plans to destroy the town of Hawkins by targeting and abducting its most vulnerable residents. Here’s a breakdown of his scheme.
Vecna Wants To “Reshape The World” In Stranger Things
In the first part of Stranger Things season 5, Vecna reveals his plan to completely change the world. The season begins with a flashback to the first season, showing the Demogorgon grabbing Will in the Upside Down and pulling him into Vecna’s base. Once there, Vecna injects Will with an unknown substance, which appears to create a stronger mental connection between them.
Vecna plans to continue creating powerful beings by using children, and his next target is Holly Wheeler, the younger sister of Nancy and Mike. In the first episode of volume 1 of season 5, a Demogorgon appears in Holly’s bedroom. The following episode shows a violent struggle with her parents before the creature pulls Holly into the Upside Down.
Holly then walks towards a seemingly perfect house accompanied by her imaginary friend, Mr. Whatsit, but an unsettling feeling hangs over the scene. The reveal of Mr. Whatsit’s face is shocking – he’s actually Vecna, the villain from Stranger Things, and he’s brought her to the Creel House.
Even though Holly is trapped in the Upside Down, Vecna’s powers make the house seem peaceful and normal to her and Henry. Henry explains that their classmate, Derek, will soon join them, and eventually, all the other children in Hawkins will be brought there as well.
Why Vecna Is Taking Kids In Hawkins For His Plan
Vecna seems to be targeting children for his plans for a few key reasons. He believes they are naturally vulnerable, both physically and mentally, making them easy to control. He also refers to them as “vessels,” suggesting he intends to use them for something.
We quickly discover Vecna is harming children in the same way he once experimented on Will, injecting them with a mysterious substance that creates a psychic link. While he readily kills adults and uses the Demogorgons to kill many soldiers without hesitation, Vecna sees children as valuable tools for his powers.
Vecna drains the life force of the children he kidnaps, using them to amplify his own abilities through a psychic connection. But this plan has an unexpected flaw: Will Byers, one of the children, possesses a surprising strength that will become clear soon.
What Will Uncovers About Vecna’s Plan Using The Hive Mind

Vecna kidnapped children over three nights: one child including Holly on the first night, three on the second, and eight on the third. This means Vecna already had three children trapped in the Upside Down before the Demogorgons took the remaining eight, as shown at the end of episode 4. Will remembers seeing twelve spots in Vecna’s lair, which lines up with the total number of children taken.
This suggests Vecna has a sufficient following to execute his scheme. However, a major weakness in his plan emerges when Will realizes he can disrupt Vecna’s mental connection in episode 4, destroying many Demogorgons – mirroring how Vecna eliminated human characters throughout the season.
How Will’s History Convinced Vecna To Carry Out His Plan

Vecna called Will “the first” because Will was easily manipulated when Vecna initially kidnapped him, showing Vecna how vulnerable people could be. This makes sense considering Vecna’s past – he killed many children while escaping Hawkins Lab, so he clearly sees children as weak and disposable.
This seems to be a repeating pattern for him, both in the past and present. At Hawkins Lab, Henry Creel lost to Eleven because he didn’t realize her full potential. She injured him so severely that he was transformed into the terrifying Vecna.
In the final moments of episode 4, Vecna’s plan falls apart. Will, drawing strength from his memories of loved ones and the support he receives from his friends and family, manages to overcome Vecna’s expectations. He unexpectedly defeats a large number of Demogorgons, proving Vecna misjudged his capabilities in the world of Stranger Things.
