The final episodes of season 5 of Netflix’s hit sci-fi show, Stranger Things, are now available. These three new episodes ramp up the chaos and suspense in Hawkins as Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) finally reveals his plans – but will those plans doom everyone?
Jamie Campbell Bower discussed his character, Vecna, and revealed his original motivations throughout the series Stranger Things in an interview with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant.
In the second volume, we learned the Abyss isn’t just the Upside Down – it’s a completely separate world, and the Upside Down is essentially a gateway between it and Earth. Vecna appears to be planning to merge these two worlds. When asked about Vecna’s motivations, Bower explained:
He wants to completely destroy the world and rebuild it according to his vision. This idea was hinted at in season four, episode seven, when he told Eleven they could ‘remake the world, reshape it however we see fit.’ Now, he has the opportunity to tear everything down and start over.
Vecna’s plan feels familiar to many villainous schemes we’ve seen before. In the first part of the story, he kidnapped children, hoping to exploit their vulnerability and use them to achieve his goal: merging Hawkins with a terrifying alternate dimension called The Abyss – the home of creatures like the Demogorgon.
We’ve learned more about the Abyss, and it seems the plans for this new world were made long ago. Bower explained this when Vecna and Eleven met in season 4.
Since many questions remain unanswered, the show’s two-hour finale needs to tie up several storylines and deliver a fulfilling ending for the core characters of Stranger Things.

It’s still uncertain if Vecna will win, but the creators of Stranger Things have promised a dark ending. While the show has sometimes held back from big risks, drawing criticism for it, it appears the finale will dramatically change the world. However, it’s not yet clear who will be responsible for that change.
You can now watch the first part of Stranger Things season 5 on Netflix, with the final part becoming available on December 31st.
