In a fresh turn of events, Venom now boasts a new host, and it won’t be long before we see a brand-new outfit inspired by everyone’s favorite wall-crawler, Spider-Man. The Lethal Protector isn’t shy of change – quite the contrary! A symbiote needs to be highly adaptable to bond with various hosts. Eddie Brock is undoubtedly the most famous Venom host, having graced three blockbuster films produced by Sony Pictures. Meanwhile, in the comic book realm, the latest Venom series, All-New Venom, has unveiled a surprising connection between Mary Jane Watson and Venom. This is an exhilarating time for Venom enthusiasts, with even more surprises on the horizon, including a costume redesign.
During a special event at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, it was announced that Venom will soon don a new outfit reminiscent of Spider-Man. As reported by Popverse, this fresh look will make its debut in issue #252 of Venom, slated for release this fall. Notably, this costume update coincides with the year that Spider-Man first wore his black suit in 1984’s Amazing Spider-Man #252. However, this wasn’t just an ordinary costume; rather, it was the same black symbiote that Spider-Man initially encountered during the original Secret Wars.
Initially, the new Venom costume is set to make its grand debut in issue #3 of “Battleworld” in November. Preview covers unveiled at the retailer panel (thanks to Bleeding Cool) depict Venom replicating Spider-Man’s poses from his 1962 debut in “Amazing Fantasy” #15 and his first encounter with the Venom symbiote in “Secret Wars” #8.
Venom Looks Good Wearing Spider-Man’s Colors
Over time, Venom’s appearance hasn’t undergone significant alterations, but Marvel has something daring in store for Venom #252 that could be its most dramatic change yet. Previously, Flash Thompson took on roles as Agent Venom and Venom the Space Knight, and now it’s Mary Jane Watson who assumes the mantle of All-New Venom. It remains uncertain if Mary Jane continues to serve as Venom’s host when it dons its fresh costume, but given her ties with Spider-Man and Venom’s growing respect for Spider-Man, it seems likely.
In contrast to Cory Smith’s Homage Variant, which draws inspiration from Amazing Fantasy #15, it includes Venom carrying both Mary Jane Watson and Eddie Brock’s son, Dylan Brock, a previous host. It’s worth mentioning that not all variants accurately reflect the storyline within the comic. Nonetheless, the red and blue color scheme of Venom in this depiction isn’t particularly unattractive.
Previously, it was revealed that the title of All-New Venom will revert to its original name and numbering starting with issue #250 in October. This issue signifies the comeback of Knull, the initial King in Black. The script for this significant symbiote storyline is penned by Al Ewing, the current writer of All-New Venom, while Terry Dodson handles the artwork. In Venom #250, Venom, who is currently attached to Mary Jane Watson, faces Knull’s revenge as he, the god of symbiotes, embarks on a quest for vengeance. Knull was first introduced during Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman’s run on Venom in 2018, rapidly ascending to become one of Marvel’s renowned villains. He served as the primary antagonist in the King in Black event series and made his big-screen debut last year in Venom: The Last Dance.
Ewing commented on Knull’s appeal, stating that Donny and Ryan initially designed him as a new formidable villain, packed with ‘a lot of villainous essence.’ He stands out visually, his intentions are clear in a single sentence, he can’t be persuaded to change course, and he possesses enough power to dominate multiple storylines. Ewing added that when powerful antagonists are given time to rest, what remains vivid in the minds of readers is their appealing traits, signaling it’s time for a return. The key to creating an effective villain, according to him, is that they may disappear, but they never truly vanish.
