Venom’s New Spider-Man Costume Has a Surprising Connection to Secret Wars

After over 40 years, it’s high time for the Venom character to undergo a redesign. Originally introduced in the 1984 issue #252 of Amazing Spider-Man by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz, the Venom symbiote has significantly shaped the Spider-Man universe. Over the years, Venom has transitioned from a sworn enemy to Spider-Man, to a reliable ally, and eventually into a hero. For most of this time, Venom has maintained its iconic black-and-white color scheme, with occasional alterations. Every significant change in Venom’s persona – like the launch of All-New Venom – warrants our attention. The latest transformation in Venom’s attire is upon us, drawing inspiration from its origins with Spider-Man and Secret Wars.

As a die-hard comic book enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about the return of a classic symbiote costume! This long-lost suit is set to make its comeback in November’s issue #3 of Battleworld, and it will resurface again in December’s issue #252 of Venom. Interestingly, the numbering for issue #252 also aligns with the Amazing Spider-Man issue where the symbiote first reappeared on Earth, bonding with Spidey during Marvel’s original Secret Wars.

The series, Battleworld, is a limited run by Christos Gage and Marcus To that continues the legacy of the original Secret Wars and the 2015 Secret Wars event. It tells the story of heroes from various realities being gathered on a single planet for what promises to be an unforgettable battle royale. This series is a must-read for any fan who enjoys epic conflicts and multiverse crossovers!

Venom Steals Spider-Man’s Colors for New Costume

Among the heroes hailing from various universes, one will don a unique costume – a Venom suit in red and blue, reminiscent of Spider-Man. This enigmatic Venom character was brought to life by writer Jordan Morris, who introduced him in the Marvel Comics series Web of Spider-Verse: New Blood #1, and collaborated with artist Luciano Vecchio, known for his work on Stormbreaker and the Spider-Verse.

Following his introduction in Battleworld issue 3, our latest protagonist subsequently appears in Venom comic #252 for a supplementary tale penned by Jordan Morris and Jesús Saíz. The primary narrative will be crafted by the creative team of Al Ewing and Paco Medina within Venom #252. Additionally, this issue brings together DeFalco and Frenz once more for a storyline that links back to their iconic Amazing Spider-Man issue from the past.

As I delve into the realms of comic book artistry, I find myself captivated by the cover illustrations for issues #3 of Battleworld and #252 of Venom, both masterfully crafted by Leinil Francis Yu, Phillip Tan, R.B. Silva, and Cory Smith. These visual treats offer a closer inspection of Venom’s fresh suit design, subtly reminiscent of Spider-Man’s timeless costume, as demonstrated in the design sheet by Luciano Vecchio.

In this new iteration, our favorite anti-hero retains his impressive physique, distinctively long tongue, and sharp teeth. However, it’s the addition of red and blue accents that set him apart from his previous appearances. A helpful note clarifies that the web-like pattern on Venom’s suit is fluid and ever-changing, a fitting detail given the symbiote’s living nature.

The real excitement lies in discovering who’s hiding beneath the Venom symbiote. It might very well be Eddie Brock given that Venom remains a towering, muscular figure, but there’s always room for an unexpected twist. For now, Mary Jane Watson serves as the host of All-New Venom, having formed a bond with him following the Venom War. This development is unknown to Peter Parker, making it another intriguing turn of events when it eventually unfolds.

Previously, Marvel revealed that the title of All-New Venom will revert to its traditional name and numbering starting with issue #250 of Venom, scheduled for October. This issue signifies the comeback of Knull, the initial King in Black. The creative team behind this story includes writer Al Ewing and artist Terry Dodson. In Venom #250, we embark on a significant symbiote narrative as Knull, the deity of symbiotes, aims to retaliate against Venom who is presently bound to Mary Jane Watson. Knull was first introduced during Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman’s run on Venom in 2018, swiftly rising among Marvel’s most renowned villains. He served as the primary antagonist in the King in Black event series and made his cinematic debut in last year’s Venom: The Last Dance.
