Brenda Blethyn has become one of Britain’s most popular actors, largely thanks to her enduring portrayal of Vera in the successful ITV detective series.
Only a few months after her previous show ended, the actress—who has been nominated for Oscars twice—is receiving high praise for her performance in the new film, Dragonfly. The movie was released in the UK last week and has already earned her several award nominations.
“I’m not sure,” she said. “I have a lot of decisions to make right now, but Christmas is coming up soon!”

When asked if playing the same character for a long time influenced her future role choices, she confessed she felt a sense of longing for her previous character, Vera.
I worked on the show for fourteen seasons, which included fifty-six movies, and I really enjoyed working with her. I had just finished that project when I immediately started this new one.
We also know that Blethyn has recently finished filming another project. She mentioned that since completing Dragonfly, she’s also finished work on A Woman of Substance, a new Channel 4 series based on the Barbara Taylor Bradford novel. This is the second time the channel has adapted the book, following a version made in 1984.

Last month, initial photos from the series were revealed, along with a description of the story. It begins in 1911, following a determined but poor maid in Yorkshire as she rises to become an incredibly wealthy woman, ultimately living in a lavish penthouse in New York. Brenda Blethyn will portray the character in her later years.
Besides her work on camera, the actress is also looking forward to starting a new project sometime next year.
I volunteered with a local charity called Sunday for Sammy when I was in Newcastle,” she explained. “They fundraise to help people in the area who can’t afford film industry training, giving young creatives a path into the arts. The event is happening again next year, and I’m hoping to participate again!
