Vera legend Brenda Blethyn’s acclaimed Channel 4 drama tipped to return

Channel 4 has reportedly ordered a second season of the drama series, A Woman of Substance, which is expected to air next year. The show will continue the story of revenge and intrigue that captivated audiences previously.

So, according to TV Zone, it looks like they’re planning to start shooting the next season in November, and it should hit Channel 4 sometime in 2027. Though, to be honest, Channel 4 hasn’t officially said ‘yes’ to another season yet, so we’ll have to wait for confirmation.

TopMob has approached Channel 4 for comment.

Based on Barbara Taylor Bradford’s popular novel, “A Woman of Substance” tells the story of Emma Harte, played by Brenda Blethyn and Jessica Reynolds, as she rises from a humble housemaid to become a powerful businesswoman.

In 1911, Emma Harte is a determined but poor servant working in Yorkshire, England. The story follows her incredible rise as she works towards becoming one of the wealthiest women in the world, eventually finding herself living in a luxurious penthouse apartment in New York City.

I’m totally hooked on this story about Emma! It follows a woman’s incredible journey through the last hundred years, basically going from having nothing to achieving everything she dreams of. What I love is that she refuses to let anyone tell her what she can or can’t do – she breaks down barriers and always keeps her eye on the prize: reaching the very top, no matter what obstacles get in her way.

The first season finished with a major surprise: Emma exposed her family’s lies and paid them off, then told her daughter Edwina that Edwin Fairley was actually her biological father.

Emma transferred ownership of her businesses to her granddaughter, Paula (Mara Huf), believing Paula was the only person she could rely on. However, Paula then surprised Emma by announcing she had married Jim Fairley and was expecting a baby.

Barbara Taylor Bradford’s novel series begins with A Woman of Substance, and the second book, Hold the Dream, follows Paula as she becomes head of the family business.

The series appears to be closely following the plot of the books. However, it’s still uncertain if it will keep showing flashbacks about Emma and the Fairley family.
