As a devoted fan of Nick Mohammed, witnessing his exceptional talent on stage and screen is nothing short of awe-inspiring. His humble beginnings and small cosy living room, where he watches phenomenal shows like “Industry” or “A Christmas Carol (ish)”, make his success even more inspiring.
At the moment, Nick Mohammed is performing at London’s Soho Place theatre in a show titled “A Christmas Carol (sort of)”. Don’t forget to check out “Ted Lasso” on Apple TV+.
What’s the view from your sofa?
In simpler terms, our TV isn’t very big, and we don’t own a large, wall-mounted flatscreen. Our sofa is quite old and worn out. My wife, Becka (who is a teacher), and I have had this sofa since we were renting. We’ve been planning to get a new one, but with our three little children causing spills frequently, it doesn’t seem like the right time yet. However, I absolutely love our compact, comfortable living room.
What have you enjoyed on TV recently?
Just wrapped up binge-watching the Industry series three, an absolute stunner! The theme revolves around money, ambition, and characters who may not be universally lovable, yet it’s masterfully executed. It kept me on the edge of my seat throughout!
Do you watch much comedy?
Generally, I steer clear of humor since it’s easy to unintentionally mimic it. Additionally, as my profession involves it, I find myself drawn more to dramatic pieces when relaxing, as I encounter enough of it throughout the workday.
At the moment, you find yourself playing the role of Mr. Swallow in a somewhat Christmas-themed performance. How would this character perceive Charles Dickens?
Essentially, Santa serves as our grumpy counterpart, known for his stinginess and reluctance to give gifts. He even calls off Christmas on Christmas Eve, only to be visited by three spirits. The character of Mr. Swallow carries a worn-out charm, hinting at past glory, but now seeming somewhat outdated. This character was inspired by my teacher from Leeds when I was 14, and it has a flamboyant, exaggerated quality to it.
Why did you decide to adopt an alter ego while performing?
I like to preserve the mystery! It was also more of a nerves thing when I started doing live comedy. It was useful to hide behind a mask. Even with something like Taskmaster, which I did as myself, I still wanted to hide behind Dracula make-up! It helped me feel less self-conscious.
Are supporters of “Ted Lasso” confused by Mr. Swallow when they attend your performances? His presence at this year’s BAFTA Film Awards left many taken aback!
Absolutely, it’s a perfect 100%. Yet, it’s exciting because there’s an opportunity to impress. The Bafta event was one of those instances where I felt compelled to accept, given its exceptional nature. It was like orchestrating a joke on a thousand-person Hollywood audience. I recall stepping off the stage thinking, “Oh my, God.” I enjoyed it immensely, but it was nerve-wracking!

You played Nate in Ted Lasso. How has the show’s success changed your life?
What no one ever teaches you is what happens when something goes really well! I still feel like I’m dealing with that change in pace. Obviously there are tangible things such as getting stopped in the street every day. I’ve got a young family, so you do have to be mindful of that.
As a father of three, how do you balance family life with this busy new stage of your career?
Primarily, it’s due to my extraordinary wife that our schedule is flexible – we need to handle each week as it arrives. However, during filming times, things can get challenging because the hours are extensive, often causing me to depart before everyone retires and return when they’re preparing for bed.
Has Ted Lasso changed the kind of roles you’re being offered?
It appears that things have indeed shifted for me. I’m now receiving more serious film opportunities, some even venturing into dramatic roles. It makes one realize the unpredictability of the industry, as I can’t help but wonder if my abilities have evolved. Quite possibly they haven’t; in fact, they might have deteriorated! Yet, I find myself being considered for this role or called for auditions.
Have there been any updates on whether “Ted Lasso” will come back for another season, specifically the fourth one? Can you share some insights regarding this matter?
It’s clear that there are discussions happening among us about the possibility of continuing the project. Jason Sudeikis, both as creator and star, holds significant influence over the decision. If an idea arises that feels right to everyone involved, we would all be eager participants. Personally, I’d jump at the chance to return!
