Since Justin Lin brought the core cast back together for the fourth Fast & Furious film in 2009, the series has consistently released a new movie every two years. This pattern continued with Fast Five (2011), Fast & Furious 6 (2013), Furious 7 (2015), The Fate of the Furious (2017), Hobbs & Shaw (2019), F9 (2021), and Fast X (2023). While this consistency is impressive, it’s becoming problematic as we await the promised conclusion to the saga. Fast X ended on a cliffhanger, but two years have passed with no news about when the final Fast movie will be released, or even when production might begin.
The recent box office performance of the Fast & Furious films is a concern. F9 earned $500 million less than Fate of the Furious, and Fast X earned even less, despite a very high production cost. While another Fast movie – either Fast 11 or Fast X Part 2 – will likely happen, these lower earnings could impact Vin Diesel‘s career. He’s attempting to balance this by developing sequels to films where he doesn’t play Dominic Toretto, but it remains to be seen if these will be enough to maintain his career momentum.
No One Asked for The Last Witch Hunter 2: The Lion’s Oath but It’s Coming Anyway

In 2015, Vin Diesel played an immortal witch hunter tasked with saving the world. Despite strong performances from Diesel and his co-star Elijah Wood, the film was heavily criticized and performed poorly with both critics and audiences, earning a low 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film’s disappointing performance impacted both its financial results and how viewers perceived its quality, particularly in the United States. While it only earned $27.4 million domestically on a $90 million budget, it performed much better internationally, bringing in around $120 million overseas.
Despite the first movie being quickly forgotten, a sequel is in the works, likely due to its international success. It’s a surprising decision, and production is moving forward quickly. In fact, Michael Caine is even unretiring to play his original character again. It’s remarkable that The Last Witch Hunter 2: The Lion’s Oath is the film that brought him back.
Riddick: Furya Has Some Potential but It’s Been Brewing for a While

Following the disappointing performance of The Chronicles of Riddick, Vin Diesel and director David Twohy decided to reboot the series with a more streamlined approach – simply titled Riddick. Similar to the original Pitch Black, this new film featured a focused story, a lower budget, and a mature R rating. Like Pitch Black, it also managed to turn a reasonable profit.
On the surface, a new Riddick: Furya film seems like a logical next step. Filming reportedly began in August 2024, with Vin Diesel sharing updates on Instagram, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
The next Riddick movie, Riddick: Furya, will bring the main character back to his home world and introduce other Furyans. Details are scarce, but it will be interesting to see if the production budget is similar to the 2013 film Riddick (around $38 million, or $53 million today). If it is, the movie could be profitable. However, even if successful, it’s likely that Richard B. Riddick’s story in live-action films will only continue for a few more installments.
Vin Diesel primarily focuses on franchise films these days. His last four movies – F9, Thor: Love and Thunder, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Fast X – all fall into that category. While he continues to voice Groot, that role is limited and doesn’t involve on-screen appearances. Once the Fast & Furious series ends, it’s unlikely he’ll launch a new successful franchise, as seen with the unsuccessful Bloodshot. It would be great to see him take on challenging roles like he did in the 2006 film Find Me Guilty. However, it seems more likely we’ll see sequels to his existing franchises like The Last Witch Hunter and Riddick, and potentially even more xXx movies.
