The 2002 action film starring Vin Diesel, titled “xXx “, is currently a popular choice among streaming viewers, offering another opportunity for audiences to immerse themselves in an exhilarating journey. Following the triumph of “The Fast and the Furious“, Diesel aimed to solidify his position as a rising star in action movies by assuming the lead character as Xander Cage.
The movie “The Fast and the Furious” was directed by Rob Cohen. It centers around Cage, an adrenaline junkie who excels in extreme sports, who is enlisted by the government to work as a spy instead. Despite garnering mixed opinions from critics, with a score of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, it proved to be a financial success, generating nearly $280 million at global box offices (as reported by Box Office Mojo).
Unlike many of Diesel’s other well-known films, his portrayal of Xander Cage has not received much discussion years after its release. With the rise in popularity of streaming platforms and audiences appreciating action-packed stunts, similar to those in the Mission: Impossible series, there could be a growing recognition for Cage’s performances.
Vin Diesel Pull Off Ridiculous Stunts As Xander Cage
The Movie Embraces Over-The-Top Action
As a die-hard movie fan, I’ve got to say that Vin Diesel playing a spy who loves extreme sports promises an adrenaline rush like no other! While the Fast and Furious series became synonymous with jaw-dropping action scenes as it evolved, the Xander Cage saga kicked off as a wild, outrageous rollercoaster ride of action that didn’t disappoint. What makes it even more mind-blowing is that Diesel pulled off many of these death-defying stunts without any backup!
According to Director Rob Cohen, during an interview, it was revealed that Vin Diesel was extremely eager to perform the stunt, but Cohen himself was uncertain. Eventually, Cohen recommended that Diesel should do the stunt instead. [Source: Hollywood Archives]
“I think the thing is that Vin did more than he should have, but less than he wanted to.”
In a thrilling sequence, Xander tried to escape an avalanche while snowboarding, with Diesel executing that jump personally and unfortunately landing on his head. One of the jaw-dropping moments is the daring stunt at the start where Xander drives a sports car off a bridge, then jumps out with a parachute.
In another memorable moment, Xander performs an exhilarating stunt by racing a motorbike across the top of a structure that subsequently blows up. Despite the outlandishness and disorderliness of these feats, they contribute significantly to the film’s unbridled excitement.
There’s An Entire Underrated Xander Cage Franchise
There Have Been Three Movies To Date
Although it may not receive as much focus as the “Fast and Furious” series, the Xander Cage films have still managed to create their own movie collection, although it’s significantly smaller. Notably, this series also follows a similar path as Vin Diesel’s “Fast and Furious” journey.
Reflecting on the triumph of the initial film, a sequel was commissioned, but much like Vin Diesel opted out for “2 Fast 2 Furious,” the actor chose to depart from Xander Cage too. Consequently, “State of the Union” debuted with the illusion of Xander’s demise, triggering a hunt for a fresh agent. Ice Cube’s character Darius Stone, a former Navy SEAL serving time, stepped into the role, squaring off against Willem Dafoe in the antagonist position.
In much the same way that The Fast and the Furious series welcomed back Vin Diesel for The Return of Xander Cage, so too did he rejoin the franchise. Furthermore, drawing inspiration from the success of Fast Five, he integrated more of the series, with Ice Cube appearing in a cameo role as Stone.
It Doesn’t Look Like We’re Getting A Fourth Movie
The Franchise Seems To Be Done
Unlike Vin Diesel’s comeback to the Fast and Furious series, the Xander Cage series didn’t experience a significant revival with the actor reprising his role. Although Return of Xander Cage received the same mixed critical reception, it surpassed the box office earnings of both its predecessors in the franchise. However, there has been no progress on a fourth film and it appears that the series may have concluded for now.
The most recent news regarding the franchise has been less than exciting, as actress Ruby Rose, known for her role as Adele Wolff in the third film, stated that no discussions about a fourth Xander Cage movie have taken place.
I haven’t received any updates. It’s been quiet since 1974 (chuckles). No, I don’t have the answer. I’d be thrilled if we could collaborate with that team again because they are simply amazing individuals. I believe Vin is occupied with Fast and Furious 312, and I’m not sure, but working together on another action-packed movie like Dirty Angels would be a treat. Dirty Angels has a much more somber tone compared to the lighter, action-comedy feel of my other mission film.
It’s possible that something is brewing regarding the franchise that Rose isn’t privy to, given it’s been almost a decade since the last Xander Cage movie. However, considering the success of “Return of Xander Cage,” one might expect further developments if there was genuine enthusiasm for the series. Yet, given Vin Diesel’s commitment to wrapping up the Fast and Furious series and his apparent departure from the Xander Cage universe, it seems unlikely that a new movie is imminent.
