As a fervent admirer, I find myself reflecting on Vinland Saga‘s captivating narrative that unfolded in the pages of its manga, now concluding with its latest chapter. Yet, the tale of Thorfinn, our valiant protagonist, is not yet entirely concluded. The air pulsates with anticipation as we await confirmation of a third season for the enchanting Viking epic anime series. With Makoto Yukimura’s profound narrative seemingly poised for a comeback, fans find themselves on tenterhooks in eager anticipation.
For those who have journeyed alongside Thorfinn through his long-winding odyssey of self-discovery, there are still enigmas to unravel within the pages of the manga. As we bid adieu to this compelling story, the heart swells with excitement for what lies ahead for Viking enthusiasts in the near future.
Although the latest installments have been published, the manga series “Vinland Saga” is still working towards releasing its final compilation volume (number 29). Kodansha has given us a sneak peek at this upcoming volume, where Yukimura bids farewell to his cherished characters. Without giving away any spoilers, it seems that Thorfinn’s determined efforts have certainly been put towards achieving his dream, and it looks like he won’t stop there. Despite the world of “Vinland Saga” being steeped in violence and bloodshed, the idea of a peaceful existence has always seemed like a fantasy for our main character; however, his unwavering pursuit of this new setting makes him an exceptional manga protagonist. Take a look at the first glance of the final manga volume below.
The Future of Vinland
Despite Makoto Yukimura not explicitly mentioning a sequel or spin-off for Vinland Saga following its conclusion in 20XX, an interview from 2023 revealed the creator’s interest in delving into new narrative territory. Particularly, Yukimura expressed a desire to focus on Thorfinn’s journey to Istanbul and reveal the events that unfolded during this adventure. He noted, “Many fans have urged me to write about the group’s trip to Istanbul. In the series, characters like Thorfinn often discuss going there, but then we skip straight to their return. Some readers might feel a bit let down by all the talk without any resolution, so I feel compelled to tell that story.
In terms of the anime adaptation, Studio MAPPA assumed control over Vinland Saga from Wit Studio for the show’s second season. This change was logical given that season two took a distinctly different direction compared to its initial season. Instead of seeking vengeance for his father’s death, as Askeladd perished in a conflict with the king, Thorfinn shifted to living as a slave. Even though he yearned for peace, war has a propensity to intercept those within the series, and Thorfinn went to great lengths to evade the grim realities of violence that enveloped him.
