*Warning: Contains MAJOR spoilers for Virgin River season 7!*
I was really surprised to hear that two of our favorite actors won’t be back for season eight of Virgin River! Patrick Sean Smith, who runs the show, confirmed the news, and it’s definitely a bummer.
Marco Grazzini, known for his role as Mike Valenzuela, is departing the show after five seasons of the romantic drama.
Both Grazzini and Lauren Hammersley, who plays Charmaine Roberts, will not be in season 8.
I’m focused on ensuring the show has a long life and that the characters we continue with have enough compelling storylines to keep things interesting,” Smith explained to Deadline. “We don’t have any planned cast changes right now, but as some characters’ stories naturally conclude, we’ll need to make choices and introduce new characters.
The departures of these characters felt natural given what had happened in the show’s eighth season. Mike’s relationship with Brie ended when she turned down his marriage proposal. However, he found a new chance at happiness by reconnecting with Victoria, a former police officer who came to Virgin River to investigate Doc’s work.

Smith explained that Mike won’t be a major focus for now, as they need to develop some new storylines first. Bringing Mike back to Victoria felt like a good conclusion to his current arc, especially given their existing character relationships. However, Smith also expressed fondness for the character Marco and suggested he could return with a more significant role if the writing allowed for it.
Let’s talk about Charmaine. At the end of season six, things looked really bad for her when Jack showed up to find her house completely torn apart. For most of season seven, everyone assumed she and the twins had gone into hiding, maybe even running from the law after Calvin’s death. But it turns out that whole idea was way off base – she wasn’t on the run at all!
Brie and Mike’s investigation revealed that Charmaine had been kidnapped by her old boss, who was also the one responsible for Calvin’s death. With the mystery solved, Charmaine and the twins were able to start fresh and disappeared from public view.
According to Smith, there are currently no plans to bring Charmaine back for season 8.
He added that he’d be happy to revisit the character in the future, but only if it meant moving beyond storylines focused on dramatic suspense and misleading pregnancy plots.

Besides Grazzini, the main cast members are all anticipated to be back for season 8. This includes Ben Hollingsworth, whose character Brady’s future was left uncertain at the end of the last season.
The show is bringing back several familiar faces, including Cody Kearsley as Clay, a new addition to Virgin River. We also saw Tony (Matty Finochio) in season 7, helping Hope (Annette O’Toole) while Lizzie (Sarah Dugdale) was on maternity leave. It’s currently unknown if Tony will be back for season 8.
Smith recently learned the actor had already committed to a regular role on a different show, meaning he wouldn’t be available at the start of their filming schedule. However, Smith is hoping to bring him back later, as he brought a lot of positive energy and humor to the set, and his dynamic with Hope was particularly strong. They wouldn’t want to lose that good chemistry.
Austin Nichols, who played the heart surgeon caring for Mel and Jack’s newborn adopted son, is someone that the show’s creator, Krista Vernoff, hopes will be able to return if his availability allows.
He explained that the actor had also scheduled another commitment, so they were adjusting their plans around his availability. He noted that the cast is incredibly talented, which is why everyone is eager to work with them.
