Mama must’ve told Doja Cat to knock out LL Cool J at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards.
In my role as an enthusiastic audience member, I found myself captivated as LL Cool J, also known as James Todd Smith, concluded his opening speech during the September 7th ceremony. Simultaneously, a pre-recorded performance by the renowned “Paint the Town” rapper began to play on the giant screens behind him on stage at the UBS Arena in New York City. “I don’t want not to be rude, but I’d just like to interrupt,” Doja began. “Can everyone sit down?”
She went on to say, “I have a very unique collaboration coming up with Kenny G. So, please, take a seat, unwind, and crank up the sound!
After that, the 29-year-old delivered a captivating rendition of “Jealous Type,” complete with a talented saxophonist.
Instead of being upset, LL Cool J actually appreciated having his monologue cut short, as he was part of the joke. During his opening, the “California” rapper enthusiastically discussed the importance and diversity of music.
In simpler terms, he said to the audience, “Music unites us all, no matter if it’s pop, country, Latin, hip hop, K-pop, or classic rock that you’re currently grooving to.
This man, who is now 57 years old, is hosting the award show for a second time. Back in 2022, he teamed up with Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow to co-host the event.
In simpler terms, LL Cool J once shared that it was his initial performance on the VMAs stage (back in 1991) that he specifically recalled. He explained that through this appearance, they were essentially introducing hip-hop music to a global audience for the first time.
On that particular evening, the star of Any Given Sunday had an unforgettable experience, as he received the Best Rap Video award for his popular song “Mama Said Knock You Out.” In 1997, six years later, he was bestowed the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, making history by being the very first rapper to receive this prestigious prize.
It was quite a turn of events when he got the prestigious Moon Person award, which was presented by none other than Mariah Carey, this year’s Vanguard Award honoree.
In March, LL Cool J commended his collaborator on “I’ll Be Lovin’ You Long Time,” stating that she is among the most exceptional singers, songwriters, and artists ever.
For many years, spanning multiple decades, Mariah has consistently captivated audiences with her powerful vocals, heartfelt songs, and intimate life narrative, as expressed during the 2025 iHeartRadio Awards. This extraordinary artist has shattered numerous global chart records throughout her career.
He commented on the singer, saying, “This is an extraordinary, triumphant tale of a hero – one might compare it to a magical butterfly or a beacon of love. It consistently stirs deep emotions within us.
