Robert Kirkman, the creator of hits like The Walking Dead and Invincible, is continuing his success with a new comic series. Kirkman has seen a lot of success recently, not only by adapting his comics into popular TV shows, but also by leading the shared G.I. Joe/Transformers universe, known as the Energon Universe, which is also coming to television. Now, his latest original creation, the epic fantasy series Skinbreaker, is quickly becoming one of Image Comics’ best-selling titles in recent years.
Image Comics announced that Skinbreaker #1 was their best-selling comic in September 2025, sharing the news on their website. While popular titles like those in the Energon Universe (including Transformers #24 at #3) made the top ten, Skinbreaker—from Robert Kirkman and artist David Finch (known for his work on Batman: The Dark Knight and Wonder Woman)—took the #1 spot, even surpassing another Kirkman title, Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #5. Image Comics described the launch of the new series as feeling like a major event from the very first page.
Robert Kirkman’s Skinbreaker is a Huge Victory for Original Ideas

Robert Kirkman, known for creating immersive and often intense worlds, continues his success with Skinbreaker. This new comic introduces readers to Chieftain Enor, an aging leader preparing to pass on his powerful weapon, the Skinbreaker, to his successor, Anok. After just two issues, Skinbreaker is already proving to be incredibly popular with comic book fans, as confirmed by Image Comics.
As a comic book fan, I’m always on the lookout for fresh stories, and Image Comics usually delivers more original ideas than the big two, Marvel and DC. Though they do have some established franchises that pull in the crowds – and let me tell you, the Energon Universe is fantastic! It’s just rare to see a brand new comic really take off. But Skinbreaker is proving that readers are hungry for something new, and when you have a creative team as strong as Robert Kirkman and David Finch involved, people definitely notice. It’s a great sign for the industry, and I’m excited to see where this goes.
It’s great when new comic book ideas do well, and the success of Skinbreaker – even outselling popular titles like Invincible and those in the Energon Universe – shows the industry that readers are eager for original and exciting stories. While comics based on existing properties are fine, the medium is stronger when fresh ideas flourish.
