WalletConnect Foundation and Reown establish UX standards framework

As a seasoned researcher with a decade-long immersion in the dynamic world of blockchain and cryptocurrencies, I find the recent launch of WalletGuide and the WalletConnect Certification by the WalletConnect Foundation and Reown an incredibly promising development for the industry.

The WalletConnect Foundation together with Reown have introduced WalletGuide – an all-encompassing resource detailing various cryptocurrency wallets, along with WalletConnect Certified – a collection of user experience (UX) guidelines aimed at promoting better design, quality, and interface consistency within the blockchain wallet community.

At the moment, a total of 19 wallets have earned the WalletConnect accreditation. These include Binance Web3 Wallet, SafePal Wallet, TokenPocket, Timeless X, Safe Wallet, Zerion Wallet, Crypto.com, DeFi Wallet, Ronin Wallet, Trust Wallet, OKX Wallet, Bitget Wallet, UniswapWallet, Rainbow, Bybit, Kraken Wallet, 1inch Wallet, imToken, Ledger, and MetaMask. In simpler terms, these are the wallets that have been certified by WalletConnect.

According to Pedro Gomes, Director of the WalletConnect Foundation, he outlined the approach used for setting the WalletConnect certification standards in a conversation with CryptoMoon.

“Excellence in onchain UX standards includes several factors decided upon after user feedback and community collaboration. The areas we focused on included, minimizing clicks, reducing transaction friction, interoperability, and providing clear and accessible information. CAIP-25 standard played an important role in this initiative.”

Moreover, Gomes pointed out that these standards will adapt over time as they cater to shifting user requirements and market trends.

Poor user experience and interfaces holding back mass adoption

As a crypto investor, I’ve come to understand that one significant hurdle towards widespread acceptance is the user experience (UX). Frankly speaking, the blockchain technology we’re dealing with isn’t straightforward enough for an average Joe or Jane to handle comfortably. Complicated interfaces serve as a formidable technical wall, deterring many potential users from diving into the crypto world. However, easy-to-use interfaces are key attractors for newcomers who are considering setting up digital wallets in the realm of cryptocurrencies.

Chain abstraction and minimizing interoperability friction are also key components for providing an enhanced user experience. However, industry executives argue that ease of use for the end consumer often takes a backseat to security measures — which increase the complexity of interacting with cryptocurrencies, decentralized finance, and Web3 applications.

Gomes clarified that the “WalletGuide and WalletConnect Certified” is a collaborative effort within the community, where insights from wallet service providers and users are utilized to enhance the overall user experience.

Users, particularly developers and members of the cryptocurrency community, frequently express their desire for more straightforward user interfaces and interactions.

In 2023, well-known developer 0xDesigner compared the intricacy of numerous modern crypto apps to operating a stick-shift car, suggesting that the future of cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology should function effortlessly for the typical user, much like an automatic transmission vehicle.
