Warner Bros. Announces a New Lord of the Rings Movie (And You’ll Never Guess Who’s Writing It)

J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings is a beloved fantasy story, famous for both its books and the popular film trilogy directed by Peter Jackson in the early 2000s, which many consider to be cinematic masterpieces. The world Tolkien created continues to grow, with new projects like Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum already in development, and even more stories planned – including a new Lord of the Rings movie with an unexpected writer.

Stephen Colbert is working on a new Lord of the Rings movie for Warner Bros., titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. Set fourteen years after Frodo’s journey ends, the film will follow Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they revisit the beginning of their original adventure. At the same time, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, uncovers a hidden secret and investigates a potential reason why the War of the Ring almost failed before it truly started. The movie draws inspiration from chapter eight of The Fellowship of the Ring, titled “Fogs on the Barrow-downs.”

Stephen Colbert Is A Surprising But Perfect Choice for the New Lord of The Rings Movie

It might be surprising to see Stephen Colbert – best known as the host of The Late Show since 2015 – involved in the new Lord of the Rings film, but it actually fits perfectly. Colbert has been a dedicated fan of Tolkien’s work his entire life and is very familiar with the books. He’s even hosted panels about Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit at Comic-Con, including for Amazon’s series and the 2014 film The Battle of the Five Armies. His passion for the story is clear when he talks about why this particular tale is being adapted for the big screen.

Colbert explained that while he loves both the books and the films, he kept returning to the first six chapters of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring,’ which weren’t fully used in the first movie adaptation, as revealed in a video announcing his project.

Following the release of The Hunt for Gollum, a new Lord of the Rings film, Shadow of the Past, is planned. The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis, is currently scheduled to premiere in cinemas on December 17, 2027.
