Before James Gunn took over, Warner Bros. had a reputation for making things difficult for filmmakers working on DC projects. The cancellation of the Batgirl movie – which brought back Michael Keaton as Batman before his appearance in The Flash – is well-known. Warner Bros. ultimately cancelled Batgirl after it was completed, choosing to write off the loss for tax purposes. Now, it’s come to light that another Batman spin-off project was also cancelled by Warner Bros., but this time after only three months of production, before it could be finished.
According to ComicBookMovie.com, an animated Catwoman movie was being developed for HBO Max but was cancelled by Warner Bros. after just three months of work. Interestingly, the team working on this Catwoman project is the same one currently making the upcoming Dynamic Duo movie for the DC Universe. Swaybox’s Arthur Mintz reportedly said in a now-removed interview that they had been given the go-ahead to create a feature film about Catwoman’s childhood.
Mitnz explained that the Catwoman project was halted after three months of development when Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav reduced the number of projects being created for streaming. Zaslav canceled a total of 42 projects, including theirs, which then led them to Dynamic Duo. Mitnz shared that Matt Reeves showed footage of Catwoman to Zaslav, and the two agreed to collaborate on a new project. Rather than a prequel focused solely on Catwoman, they’ll now be developing a prequel story featuring both Dick Grayson and Jason Todd.
Swaybox Studios had been working on a Catwoman movie for HBO Max aimed at children for three months when the project was cancelled in 2022. Some of the artwork featured on their website might be from this unfinished film, and not their current project, ‘DYNAMIC DUO.’

The New Batman Spin-Off Should Make Catwoman’s Cancellation Worth It

I was really excited about the Catwoman movie they were planning – a kid-friendly take on her origin story would have been a blast! But honestly, I’m even more hyped about what they’re doing now. A movie about young Dick Grayson and Jason Todd? That sounds incredible! The idea of showing how their different visions for the future drive them apart is a really compelling story, and I think DC animation is going to knock it out of the park with it.
Okay, so James Gunn’s DCU is really building out the Batman corner of things, and I’m getting excited! We’ll see a darker, horror-tinged spin-off with Clayface in 2026, then Matt Reeves will give us The Batman Part II in 2027 to continue that gritty story. But the big news for me is Dynamic Duo, slated for 2028. This will be the first animated Batman film under Gunn’s DCU, and it sounds fantastic – it’s all about the two Robins learning to work together and finding their own heroic identities. And Gunn’s hinted at The Brave and the Bold being a real game-changer, promising to really expand the Batman universe as a whole. It’s a lot, but it feels like a smart, connected plan.
It’s currently unclear what role Catwoman will have in future DC films. With Zoë Kravitz unlikely to return for The Batman – Part II and the planned Catwoman spin-off cancelled, there are no immediate plans for the character. Although fans are excited about the potential introduction of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, many believe Catwoman also deserves her own dedicated story, but that will likely have to wait.
